T.R.O.Y. Presents – Sounds Like The 90s Vol. 24

Tuesday, August 16th, 2016

We create these Sounds Like The 90s, to share with you new(er) tunes, that we feel represent that 90s hip-hop we love. Listen with an open mind and most importantly, support the artists featured on these Sounds Like The 90s if you like what you hear. 24 is a great number, my favorite number for obvious reasons, so it only made sense to incorporate my childhood idol Rickey Henderson on the cover. Props to dirt_dog for always blessing the artwork. And if you’re a fan of his work, you’ll be happy to know our Certified Dope Apparel is back for a limited time as well. Peace to to all those who continue to support Philaflava, Steady Bloggin and of course, T.R.O.Y.   –Jason Gloss

SLT90s 23

It’s been two years since the last Sounds Like The 90’s. No excuses, so let’s just dive right into this. For those not hip to these series, it’s a compilation of recent music that has come over over the past year. The criteria is simple, it either has to sounds like or feature artists from the 90’s. The reality is, there isn’t much music these days that truly sounds like the 90’s, which is probably why it took forever to make Volume 23. Not all, but a lot of music completely misses our radar and that is the purpose of these compilations. Thanks for all those who continue to support Philaflava, Steady Bloggin and of course, T.R.O.Y.  –Jason Gloss

T.R.O.Y. & Certified Dope Apparel Present – Sounds Like The 90′s Vol. 22

Friday, September 20th, 2013

It’s been a constant struggle to produce these lately, manly because I always feel I’m at an impasse with the selections. Is it too new sounding? Is it too dated? Is the quality of the mp3 good? Then of course, there is always, isn’t this track kinda played out by now?

I know it’s hard to believe, but I really do put in work selecting, sequencing and creating the overall package for your CD-r or iTunes. This time around T.R.O.Y. and Certified Dope Apparel bring you volume 22, a compilation that features a collection of tracks that we feel exemplifies just how great hip-hop has been, even if a few joints are slightly aged by now.

15+ years ago Ecko used to give mixtapes out with the purchase of their clothes. I never did rock much Ecko, but I made sure to rock those mixtapes. It was an ingenious idea by Mark Milecofsky Mark Ecko. Now 100 million dollars later you have Eckō Unltd. Not that we’re expecting to reach those levels but we feel we have something special with these 3 great collaborative shirts with Certified Dope. And of course, purchase or no purchase, we hope you enjoy our latest offering,  the Sounds Like The 90’s Vol. 22 .

Vol. 22 takes us back in time, so extract the file, burn to a disc (56 mins total) or add to your playlist. Spread the word, spread the file and let’s celebrate hip-hop music.  I hope you enjoy Sounds Like The 90’s as much as I do creating them, even if it’s sometimes a challenge. –PhilaflavabomockbiggercousinmockbiggersologreymockbiggersolotankbiggerCLICK HERE TO ENTER STORE

SLT90s 21-front

It’s been an awfully long time since we last dropped Sounds Like The 90’s, 586 days to be exact.

Moving forward I will be doing my best to produce this series every 6-8 weeks. It’s hard gathering select tracks because as many of you know, there just isn’t a lot of music these days that remind us of the 90s.

I make these compilations because it represents where we are today. It usually contains tracks that emphasize an era in which we all know will more than likely never be duplicated again.  Some tracks on these compilations contain contemporary music that might have a slight hint of that era. Others, well it may just contain an artist that was very relevant from the 90s. Overall, these are put together to showcase today’s music as a music time capsule.

So, whether you like one track, ten tracks or all of them, enjoy these compilations for what they are. While terms like “exclusives” have become extinct due to new age technology and the blogsophere, we do our best to hand pick relatively newer material.

Enjoy 21 and sorry for the wait.

T.R.O.Y. Presents – Sounds Like The 90s Vol. 18

Tuesday, March 8th, 2011

A little over three months have past since the last volume and the only reasoning for that is the music. Towards the end of the year and the beginning of the year the music industry slows down and resets. During that hiatus there were quite a few tracks definitely worthy of your attention. So while this version may not contain the newest of the new, it does showcase what I feel is a nice lead-in, to what may be a pretty solid year in hip-hop. We got one of the newest groups of out Philly, Writtenhouse. New Wu of course. Two of the most promising emcees bringing back authentic NY hip-hop, Meyhem Lauren and Action Bronson. We got two Focus tribute tracks, one to Ali Shaheed Muhammad and the other to RZA. We got your Black Thought fix, along with an extremely dope J. Period remix featuring Rakim Allah. There is definitely something for everyone on Vol. 18.

Thanks to all the people that have supported this project over the years. Props to Dirt_Dog and Strategy for helping–as always. Shouts to the entire T.R.O.Y. squad and our readers. Download link and front cover are below, back cover and tracklist after the jump. – Philaflava

T.R.O.Y. Presents – Sounds Like The 90s Vol. 17

Thursday, December 2nd, 2010

The last volume before the new year. While it was a pretty good year in hip-hop, there wasn’t an overwhelming amount of throwback tracks, thus us delivering you just 5 volumes of Sounds Like The 90s in ’10.

As many of you know, we do these compilations to capture an era that we all love. Some tracks do sound like the 90s, while others are artists from that era doing their thing. A few of these tracks have been out for awhile now, some even debuted on this site, but here is a tightly sequenced mix for the holidays. I wouldn’t normally put 3 tracks by one artist on a mix, but Kanye killed it this year (all 3 tracks not on the LP) and Q-Tip is responsible for 2 of those gems. There was no way I wasn’t putting these on for you guys.

Thanks to all the people that have supported over the years. We’ll continue to do these and we’re always keeping an open mind, so if you got something, don’t hesitate to link us. Props to Dirt_Dog and Strategy for helping–as always. Shouts to the entire T.R.O.Y. squad and our readers. Download link and front cover are below, back cover and tracklist are after the jump. Happy Holidays! –Philaflava
