“3 Feet High and Rising” remade by United States of Audio

usoa-de la-450

Best mix of 2013? Yes.

Following on from last year’s treatment of ‘Paul’s Boutique‘, United States of Audio does the same with De la Soul’s groundbreaking album 3 Feet High and Rising. It’s not just a mix, but more like an audio documentary about an album that is also about to celebrate it’s 25th anniversary. In his own words;

‘Several years in the making and including around 100 tracks, this is my personal tribute to De La Soul’s ‘3 Feet High and Rising’. Using original sample sources, album tracks, interviews and rarities, ‘How High’s The Water Mama’ tells the story of one of hip hop’s most influential albums.

When De La Soul’s debut album dropped in 1989 I was ten years old. Yet, by some stroke of amazing good fortune a cassette copy of ‘3 Feet High and Rising’ found its way into my hands thanks to my best mate’s older brother (though I’m pretty sure said brother had no idea of this fact!). The music was a revelation and had a significant influence in shaping my musical tastes – in fact I can’t think of any other album that has had such a profound effect on me as this one. Thus ‘3 Feet High and Rising’ holds a special place in my musical affections. Now, some twenty-five years after its original release, it’s time to pay my respect to Pos, Dove, Mase, and Prince Paul…’

Go to the SoundCloud page for the full track list and to download, it’s mad long. Thanks to Kev and Megatrip for the link.

DJ Cesare – Public Enemy White Label Turntable Megamix (1987)

Friday, April 12th, 2013

Because it’s Friday and because it’s incredibly dope.

from DJ Cesare: My 1987 white label turntable megamix of Public Enemy’s first album ‘Yo! Bum Rush The Show.’

I know I grabbed this vinyl off of another blog several years ago, and this is only side a. Maybe Cesare will post side b too. Released as a white label promo in 1988. Drop were DJ Cesare with engineer Pete Smith. It was recorded “live” using only 2 turntables and a mixer, layering beats and scratches onto an 8 track tape machine in Gee Street Records’ basement. Thanks to Striclty Kev and Megatrip for pointing this one out.

Jim Sharp “Straighten It Out Volume 2”

Thursday, January 24th, 2013

A few months ago Jim Sharp messaged me to let me know that the followup mix to “Straighten It Out” was complete. Unfortunately, I was too busy and not really focused. But now that I’ve got the time, this mix is crazy good. Chock full of Jim’s own custom edits and mixes. Especially the Willie Hutch remix and The Main Ingredient edit. As long as you’re listening, check out some of his other (unmixed) edits.

And if you missed out on volume 1, check his whole SoundCloud page or see my old post.

Pete Rock “Delicious Vinyl 25th Anniversary Mix”

Monday, September 10th, 2012

Not sure how this mix has gone unnoticed for this long.

“The Stussy x Delicious Vinyl Collection celebrates the 25th Anniversary of the LA-based record label. The minor label started in the late 80s and became a major figure in the evolution of hip-hop through the early 90s with acts such as The Pharcyde, Masta Ace, Tone Loc, The Whoridas, Young MC and Brand New Heavies. They continue to maintain working relationships with these early artists and also support the next generation of musical talent including Dom Kennedy and Casey Veggies.”

Thanks to the King for the link. And check out the full line of Stussy x Delicious Vinyl shirts HERE.

Prince Paul – Sponge Bob .. (unreleased demo 2004)

Monday, July 30th, 2012

It’s been a few months since his last post and it’s always nice to see Prince Paul back at it again. Not quite the rare gem like he’s dropped over the last 10 months but it certainly shows some of his fun trippy side. For the kids of course.

Found on SoundCloud… a couple remixes

Monday, June 25th, 2012

I know this Nas track has been kicking around for a few months now, but here’s the new (official?) Massive Attack remix. Gives it a whole new vibe. I can live without anything after the 4:45 mark.

And here’s a tasty remix by Waggles. Bring the horns.

The Pharcyde “Phriday Phun Pack #11”

Friday, May 4th, 2012

Here we go again. 2nd to last pack and I hope that everyone has been enjoying this series. First up is a SoundCloud gem from DJ Phaze (what’s up Perth?) followed by another solo track from Bootie Brown, different spelling than usual, then a collabo with a former NFL wide receiver from the Carolina Panthers. Next we come to the mystery instrumental. This one popped up on  a cd single back in 2000 and I always assumed it would have been used on Lip’s album, had it not be delayed for 5 years. Or maybe it was just an extra beat from Edy Crahp who produced a couple other tracks for Fatlip. And taking the #5 slot is nice vinyl only remix coming out of Hyogo, Japan.

Suggestions are always welcome, pheel phree to leave a comment. Although time is running out.

Phriday Phun Pack #11
01 The Pharcyde-Passin By Clarence Reid (itsphizzle remix) (2011?)
02 Bootie Brown-I Smoke (2003)
03 The Pharcyde & Raghib “Rocket” Ismail-Gotcha Lookin’ (1996)
04 Fatlip-Edy’s Groove (Instrumental) (2000)
05 The Pharcyde-Runnin’ (Remix by Shin-Ski of Martiangang) (2010)

The Pharcyde “Phriday Phun Pack #10”

Friday, April 27th, 2012

Not too much to say about this pack. Leading off is another excellent find on SoundCloud. Artistix was kind enough to give me a nice quality file to share with everyone. He also gave me a few suggestions for what else he’d like to hear in the pack. If you like this remix, check out his other work HERE. A solo track from Imani, I don’t know about you but I’d like to hear more from Citizen Strange. A remix off the “Plain Rap” album by Scram Jones (nice list of projects he’s worked on) and another solo track, this time from Booty Brown. Rounding it out is a remix from DJ DUS (aka DJ Dusty Olivera). Not the strongest remix I’ve ever heard, but an incredibly infectious beat that has kept this remix in my rotation for years now.

Suggestions are always welcome, pheel phree to leave a comment.

Phriday Phun Pack #10
01 The Pharcyde-Ya Mama (Artistix Remix) (2006)
02 Imani as Citizen Strange-Strange (2001)
03 The Pharcyde feat. Black Thought-Network (Scram Jones Remix) (2001)
04 Booty Brown-Dorothy (Poor Dorothy Mix) (2002)
05 The Pharcyde-Passin’ Me Cumbia (DJ DUS Remix) (2008)
