A couple of weeks ago, Complex mag had the gods Kon and Amir throw together a 50 Greatest Samples list. There were detractors as is usually the case with any type of list, especially hip hop related. I would not disagree completely with heads who found fault, nor the list, if it was simply titled “50 Great Samples“, instead of “The 50 Greatest Samples”. You just can’t make a list like that without omitting hundreds of possible contenders or without sparking debates from online “sample specialists”.
We’re gonna keep this titled “Kon And Amir’s 50 Great Samples Companion” to appease all the diggers. I’m not gonna front, I damn sure didn’t rip my own records just for this, since they were all pretty easily findable. Some of them are from CD’s and vinyl that I’ve ripped from my own collection, and some were found online at various different blog spots and such. Sorry, but if something is already ripped out there in high quality, I’m not gonna dig through my crates and go through the trouble of ripping my own records. Only if it isn’t out there, or if it isn’t in good quality, will that happen.
There were a couple of mistakes by Complex that I fixed here. For one, the version of “Honky Tonk” was not the one that the Beatnuts sampled. Complex used “Honkey Tonk Popcorn”, which was another song off the 1969 “Honkey Tonk Popcorn” LP, but it’s not the one the Beatnuts used. The Nuts used the other track from the album “Honkey Tonk” or the version of “Honkey Tonk” from the 45 from that album. When digging through this stuff, do remember this artist also had another song with the same title in 1956, which was definitely not that break. We left both of the 1969 versions on here, as a bonus.
And there was also something not quite right about the “Up Above The Rock” track that they posted, can’t remember what the mishap was, though, sorry.
I’m not trying to dis Complex, no way, thanks to them for getting this done.
Peace and props to Kon And Amir and to Complex for sparking this off. Now all of our loyal followers can enjoy all these breaks and hopefully dig for some of them themselves or dig for some other yet to be discovered future classics.
Enjoy!
Also, peace to Symantiks over at Philaflava for sending me the first 10-15 joints to incite me to complete this list in mp3 format for the listeners. And thanks to dirt dog for the cover.

Sample Compilation 5

Sunday, November 30th, 2008

What you need to look out for here is how Blacula was chopped for “Higher Level.” A beat only one of the greatest ears for samples could have caught. After that, check the gem by Myndcrukz featuring Twizz on the rhymes. Great, warm sample taken from the Bennie Maupin track. Bennie Maupin was a part of Herbie Hancock’s famous “The Headhunters” band, known for their own brand of Funk Jazz. We finish this comp/mix out with a great end piece including Faze-O‘s “Riding High” on heroin highway. I always thought that EPMD‘s sampling of it was way ahead of it’s time, and it’s been used many times since. But my other favorite usage, that also works well here, is OC’s outro,“Sabotage” from his incredible debut album Word … Life.

01. Milt Jackson – Enchanted Lady

02. De La Soul – Dinninit
03. Large Professor – I Juswannachill
04. Blue Mitchell – Flat Backing
05. Akinyele(ft.Kool G Rap) – Break A Bitch Neck
06. Lucien – From A Town Called Paris
07. The Mad Lads – The Promises Of Yesterday
08. Cappadonna – 97 Mentality
09. Gene Page – Blacula Strikes
10. KRS-One – Higher Level
11. Bennie Maupin – It Remains To Be Seen
12. Myndcrukz(Twizz) – Remember The Face
13. Faze-O – Riding High
14. EPMD – Please Listen To My Demo
15. OC – Outro(Sabotage)

Sample Compilation 4

Sunday, November 2nd, 2008

This time we start off with one of the greatest intros for a rap song ever.”Strange Games and Things” by Barry White’s Love Unlimited Orchestra. EPMD immortalized this song on their banger of an album,”Business As Usual“. K-Def also used it effectively for the Real Live joint off of the “High School High” soundtrack. Then, check out the Maze track that Money Boss used, 10 minutes of smoothed out soul that gets pretty heavy 6 minutes in. “Is It Because I’m Black” is another one of those Civil Rights era songs that still holds weight today. Moving along, another beautiful piece of work by the late great Minnie Riperton. I got to say I like No ID’s sampling of this the best. And,lastly,we wrap this mix up with one of my favorite RIP dedications ever, Gangstarr‘s “In Memory of..”. Primo chopped the original song up lovely, and Guru delivers some choice story telling rhymes. Enjoy and stay tuned…

01. Strange Games & Things

02. EPMD – Manslaughter
03. Real Live – Get Down For Mine
05. Money Boss Players - Sat. Nite,Sunday Morn.
06. Ryo Kawasaki – Bamboo Child

Sample Compilation 3

Sunday, October 26th, 2008

Here’s some more exceptional rap shit that sampled some exceptional funk, soul, jazz shit. The way Godfather Don flipped the Betty Davis singing was genius. The John Klemmer horns that the SD50′s lifted for “Leave Ya With This” are viral,at the least. And Half A Mill(RIP). “Homicide Scene” is probably one of my favorite obscure rap songs of all time. Graphic street drama with a message at it’s best. The Roy Ayers song it sampled and the Bohannon song are also remarkable tracks on this comp.

01. Bohannon – Song For My Mother

02. Ed O.G. & Da Bulldogs – I Got To Have It
05. Roy Ayers – Every Time I See You
06. Half A Mil - Homicide Scene
07. Jigmastas – Iz You Dee
08. Ahmad Jamal – Don’t Ask My Neighbors
10. Betty Davis – Anti Love Song
11. Godfather Don – Piece Of The Action
12. John Klemmer – Free Soul
13. Akinyele – Exercise
14. Kurious – Leave Ya With This

01. Lou Donaldson – Stop On By

03. Jimmy Ponder – Jennifer
04. Common – Invocation
05. MF Grimm – Scars And Memories
06. The Blackbyrds – Wilford’s Gone
07. Gang Starr – Say Your Prayers

10. Intelligent Hoodlum - Grand Groove
11. Jimmy Mcgriff – Back On The Track

The Samples Compilation 1

Saturday, October 4th, 2008

The point of these Sample Compilations I’m doing here is to bring you dope hip hop joints that sampled equally or, in some cases, even doper old records. I hope you all give these a thorough listen and enjoy.

We’re gonna spark this one off with a 70′s soundtrack cut by Herbie Hancock that is a great suspenseful, evil, dark alley sounding cut that has more samples than an Isaac Hayes record. You’ll hear the rugged as all hell bass line sample for J-Force‘s Bullseye come in at one point and the smooth, happier sounding Edo. G 304′s sample come in a little later. Then, we move right in to one of my favorite covers of “Light My Fire”, by Brian Augers, The Trinity and Julie Driscoll. On this, you will notice two classic samples that this song will lead into. Somewhere towards the beginning to middle, you’ll hear both parts of the classic Organized cut about females cheating with females, “Why”. Then, near the very end of the song, the sample for the infamous Ice Cube dis track by Common, “The Bitch In Yoo”. Great stuff already. Well, it only gets better.

Next up, we have a song that took me years to track down. Easy Moe Bee played it in a couple of his sample sets live on the radio in the mid 90′s, but I could never figure out what it was. Well, I finally accidentally discovered it when copping the original break record for the Artifacts,“Wrong Side Of The Tracks”. It was 9th Creation’s “Rule Of Mind”, which is just a dope funk soul track in it’s own right. This track contains the samples for Black Moon‘s “Slave” and Ill Advised’s “Kwestions”. Two more bangers, without a doubt.

Next up is a song that I like but you might think is cheesy as Chuck E. “Star Of The Story” by Heatwave.
This was also sampled by ATCQ, but I went with Smiff N Wessun’s “Nothing Move But The Money” for this. This was recorded right after the Da Shinin’ sessions or maybe even during, and I consider this the last real Smiff N Wessun track. We close this out with an ill jazz track by the extremely ill organization called Catalyst. You’ll hear the samples for the last two underground classics, “Leflaur Leflaur Eshkoshka” and the Triflict’s “Don’t Make Me Try”.

1. Herbie Hancock – Party People

2. J-Force – Bullseye
3. Showbiz & Ag – Ain’t No Fun
4. Edo.G – 304′s
5. Brian Auger,The Trinity And Julie Driscoll – Light My Fire
6. Organized Konfusion – Why
7. Common – The Bitch In Yoo (version with 3rd verse)
8. 9th Creation – Rule Of Mind
9. Ill Advised – Kwestions
10. Black Moon – Slave
11. Heatwave – Star Of The Story
12. Smiff N Wessun – Nothing Move But The Money
13. Catalyst – Uzuri
14. Triflicts – Don’t Make Me Try
15. Heltah Skeltah,OGC – Leflaur Leflaur Eshkoshka

Enjoy!
