Take It Personal – Pete Rock Tribute & Interview

Saturday, March 10th, 2018

Episode 24 was an idea we had for a while. We all said Pete Rock deserves a proper tribute, so we’re proud to finally present the first of two installments of this Soul Brother #1 tribute. If you had asked us a little over a year ago when we started Take It Personal, that we’d have two of the greatest producers of all-time as our guests, we wouldn’t have believed it. This is truly a case of dreams becoming reality. It was an honor celebrating Pete Rock’s distinguished catalog and even a bigger honor having him as a guest on our show. We talk with Pete about Heavy D, DJ Premier, De La Soul, Dilla, Redman, Kanye all the way to his top 5 producers. He shared his thoughts on drumless beats these days. We even get the answer to a possible CL Smooth reunion. Please join us as we celebrate one of the greatest producers to ever do it – Pete Rock!

Take It Personal (Ep 20: Anniversary Special)

Thursday, December 28th, 2017

Our first year is in the books! Take It Personal has released 20 episodes, including two 6+ hour tributes to both DJ Premier and Prodigy. We featured 8 exclusive interviews and dropped 8 tributes. We put together not 1, but 4 West Coast Classics, clocking in over 17 hours long. We had some fun giveaways, too. We celebrated Wu-Tang, ATCQ, Atmosphere, the architects, indie hip-hop and Philly hip-hop, but the biggest celebration we had was right here on episode 20 with you—the listeners. On Episode 20, our anniversary special, we bring it back to the essence with the music that speaks our names. The music that cold rocks a party or makes you want to cold cock somebody. It’s a non-stop celebration and best of all, we did it with your support. Thanks to all of you who called-in and chopped it up with us on the air. We had people from all over calling in and we even had a surprise call-in from Super Bowl XLVIII champion and Legion of Boom member, Walter Thurman. Your stories, your energy and your appreciation is what made this show so special for us. I’ll keep what we played on here a bit of a surprise for now, but I know EVERYONE will enjoy it! We put everything into making these shows and at the end of the day, we know, there isn’t another hip-hop podcast quite like Take It Personal. After listening to us for a year, we hope you’ll agree. Happy holidays and have a healthy New Year to all!

Take It Personal (Ep 18: Return Of The Boom Bap) with Meyhem Lauren & Planet Asia

Friday, November 17th, 2017

After spending the last 4 episodes on the West Coast, we return to the boom-bap for episode 18. Hip-hop has been very good this year and it’s because of guys like Meyhem Lauren and Planet Asia. Both Gems From The Equinox and Anchovies are up there for album of the year, so it only made sense to have these guys as our special guests interviews. We have new music from Apathy & O.C., Sean Price, Meyhem Lauren & DJ Muggs, MF DOOM, Conway, Benny, Westside Gunn, Fashawn, Da Flyy Hooligan, Edo. G, SmooVth & Giallo Point, Defari, Apollo Brown & Planet Asia, Masta Killa, Hus Kingpin, Heavy Metal Kings, Big Twins, Bermuda Triangle and Mach-Hommy to name a few, plus a ridiculous DJ 360 remix of Winter Winds. Keep it locked as the TIP crew entertains you for the next 3 hours with hip-hop and hilarity.

SLT90s 23

It’s been two years since the last Sounds Like The 90’s. No excuses, so let’s just dive right into this. For those not hip to these series, it’s a compilation of recent music that has come over over the past year. The criteria is simple, it either has to sounds like or feature artists from the 90’s. The reality is, there isn’t much music these days that truly sounds like the 90’s, which is probably why it took forever to make Volume 23. Not all, but a lot of music completely misses our radar and that is the purpose of these compilations. Thanks for all those who continue to support Philaflava, Steady Bloggin and of course, T.R.O.Y.  –Jason Gloss

Erick Sermon “Breath Of Fresh Air” Mixtape

Friday, February 17th, 2012

Looks like The Green Eyed Bandit isn’t done yet. He just dropped this new Def Squad mixtape featuring KRS-One, Sheek Louch, 50 Cent, Keith Murray, Redman, Method Man & Jimi Hendrix!?!

Nice interview with E Double over at HIPHOP DX. This is the bit about the Hendrix track:

DX:
Let’s shift from the crew stuff to your new solo material … You noted on “I’m Not Him” from your Chilltown, New York album that you “gave Marvin Gaye’s wife two hundred grand” for “Music.” So how much did you have to break off the estate of Jimi Hendrix for “A Way Out”?

Erick Sermon:
Oh my God, I’m not even gonna talk about that ‘cause I’m not even gonna – I didn’t break off nothing, that’s why it’s on the mixtape. [Laughs] It ain’t like I have a label and I have Clive Davis, or me still having money like that, to be saying here’s [$150,000] for you Marvin’s estate and here’s 50 thousand for the lawyers. I don’t got that money these days. And I can imagine what Jimi Hendrix’s estate is asking for something like that. [So] that’s why it’s a mixtape.

Too bad there isn’t anyone on his staff that knows how to rip and tag a single mp3. Most tracks are 80 k/bit while the others are 160. Oh well.
