T.R.O.Y.’s Unofficial Wu-Wednesday (Week 11)

Wednesday, February 9th, 2011

A vintage session from the Wu Tang Klann. Based on the spelling and quality of this vinyl, all signs point to bootleg. Still, nice to hear a young Clan freestyling and clowning around for 40 minutes (Tim Westwood Show?). And Meth is certainly the star of this show.

Demo: Half A Mill – Fast Money & Foreign Objects

Wednesday, January 12th, 2011

Download the mp3 here where I did my best to fix the sound quality a bit.

Hahaa… Yet another raw as all hell Half A Mill demo has surfaced and I remember loving this one upon first listen years ago. And again, straight off a WNYU radio show rip and most likely from that ever so elusive 1995 Half A Mill demo tape. In this era of unreleased material getting pressed up, this one is at the top of a lot of our lists and has been for quite a while. I wish someone would get on that already, I mean, what better time?

And make no mistake, this is indeed one of Half A Mill’s greatest joints, in my opinion1. (more…)

  1. A lot of people highly rate Half A Mill’s two “official” LPs but I honestly don’t. After hearing some of these demos, his first 12″, and all those freestyles from WNYU, those albums were straight doo doo in comparison, aside from a few joints on each one. My opinion, that’s all. []

Tuesday, November 30th, 2010

stretch bob n sear

Ahhhh yeah! The homeboy fatboybrandon from Crates Of JR, posted this 7 hour plus compilation of straight up comedy moments from the Stretch And Bobbito and CM Famalam shows, over at the TROY forum. So, click the link below, download, crack open your 40′s or IPA’s, spark one up, sit back, relax, press play, and enjoy!

Personally, I haven’t heard the “Feel My Balls” promo in stupid years and am happy just to hear it again, it NEVER gets old. And that’s not even 1% of the funny here.

The History of Hip Hop Radio (Stretch & Bobbito, etc.)

Tuesday, November 9th, 2010

When it originally started, even though hip hop radio, specifically New York hip hop radio, made up less than five percent of all radio, it quickly became integral to New York and the surrounding communities, a sub-culture within the culture, exclusively for people who were in the right place at the right time and knew what was up.

Soon a small number of shows and an even smaller amount of stations (and people) would go on to both directly and indirectly influence a large portion of music, unbeknownst in the moment to a lot of the fans and even some of the artists.

T.R.O.Y. briefly covered this (a couple times in years past actually) during the start of the T.R.O.Y. Blog, when forum member Irish Craig first threw it up on his blog. Some people inevitably slept and now we’re bringin’ it back for the full feature to get everybody the right mindset for listening to Stretch & Bobbito and rap radio in general, hopefully giving those who are unaware a basic idea of what else was going on at the time.

Stretch Armstrong & Bobbito Reunion Show (Audio)

Friday, October 22nd, 2010

Props to both Verge and Big Sleep for really making this Stretch & Bob month happen here on TROY. The amount of energy these cats are putting into this project is unreal and we all need to take the time out and thank them. Speaking of thanks, Stretch Arm and Bobbito recognized the contributions and threw a few shout outs our way on their reunion show last night. I didn’t have a chance to listen but below is a link to the entire show courtesy of Altrap. I can only imagine greatness. Peace to the entire crew, both here on TROY and WKCR. –Philaflava

Stretch And Bobbito Month: Setting It Off

Friday, October 1st, 2010

From today until the last day of October, we’ll be presenting you with as much Stretch and Bobbito related material as possible. And hopefully a bunch of ill gems you haven’t heard yet.

From the artists who got their first breaks on WKCR to Fondle ‘Em, one of the prototypes of the independent hip hop label model. From the success of Fat Beats and Sandboxautomatic, partially or even largely due to heavy promotion on the show, to Footworks, books, magazine columns, worldwide notoriety and so on and so on…
It all stemmed from this show.
Before we hit you with some of that homemade flan with the extra caramel, take some time to go back through some of our older Stretch and Bobbito related posts:
Plus, peep:
And/or join the TROY forum to help us finish plotting out the show’s history and help with tape rips.
Okay, party people, when you’re done with all of that, what better way to start this month off than with an ill promo that’s been recently released in high quality? The following two joints were taken from the recently dropped “OC – Ozone Originals” from No Sleep Recordings.

Upcoming: Stretch & Bobbito Month.

Thursday, September 23rd, 2010

That’s right, okay, okay, okay, yo, yo, yo, whoa, ayo, here we go with the flow, Bobbito’s in the house with the mic ya know…

Aight, tune on in ’cause I got some announcements for all you party people. It’s the DJ Stretch Armstrong Show, hosted by Bobbito the Barber a.k.a. Kool Bob Love a.k.a. DJ Cucumberslice a.k.a. the King of Swing, the B-O-B, in the place to be, doin’ his thing on the M-I-C.

Cuuckooo, wooo-weee, huh-hah!

Before Fondle 'Em, CM Famalam, Boogie & the Barber, the B-Side and the Hot 97 XL show, there was a show started by two hip hop heads named Adrian Bartos and Robert Garcia.

Their show, technically Adrian’s show, first started on October 25th, 1990 as The Skinny Bonz Show every other Thug Thursday night / Friday morning at one a.m. ’til five a.m. on Columbia University’s college radio station WKCR, 89-tec-9 FM New York. But it ended November 19th, 1998 as a weekly program called The Stretch Armstrong Show, hosted by Bobbito (the Barber), featuring Lord Sear.

From the promos, exclusives, demos and freestyles (much of which can still only be heard by listening to their shows to this day) to the hilarious phone calls and conversations, this show truly had it all, shit is dumb fly and hot to death.

(Peace to Vincent Lopez from THIMK for the scan.)

Colloquially people have called it the Stretch Armstrong & Bobbito Show, Stretch & Bobbito or even just Stretch & Bob. Voted hands down the best hip hop radio show of all time by The Source in '98, it was also hilario, never caca and as Stretch Boogie would say: It's kinda hot. Mad fresh baby pah, it still sounds milk.

Joisus Bobby, it’s Krunchtime! The phones are lighting up, let’s take some calls. The mic is open. KCR?

Yeah what up, I just wanna say if you have cassette tapes of shows to digitize, then get at me cat. Or rather, alternatively, get at one of these cats:

DJ Stretch Armstrong, Nes from Dirty Waters or Verge from Philaflava.

Just write ‘em a line. Any one of those three guys will help you out if you want your tapes digitally converted to MP3 and then returned to you.

Plus you should look out for Stretch & Bobbito month on The T.R.O.Y. Blog starting in one week, October 1st, it’s gonna be celebrating the twentieth anniversary since the very beginning of The Skinny Bonz / Stretch Armstrong Show.

Oh and I wanna give a shout out to Stretch the albino ostrich and say what’s up to my homepiss Bobbito, the funky smellin’ Lord Sear, Neil, Old School Randy Rand, Kurious and the whole Constipated Monkey crew, WKCR, rock rock on…

Word up, good lookin’ out kid. Alright, we’re gonna get back into the music, we got vintage radio from the private collections, so sit back and do the knowledge as we turn up the bass, aight yo, peace.
