Roy’s West Coast Underground Volume 1 (Re-Upped)

Monday, April 1st, 2013

What’s up, TROY fans. I’ve been on hiatus for a couple months, but now I’m back in full effect. I got six volumes of my favorite early-to-mid 90s west coast underground tracks on tap, so check back regularly. You may have noticed that I have a severe east coast bias, but this is also reflected in the type of west coast hip hop that I enjoy. I’ll be adhering to a strict time frame (1992-1996), with a focus on artists such as Aceyalone, Freestyle Fellowship, Ras Kass, The Pharcyde, Del, Casual, Pep Love, Souls Of Mischief, Blackalicious, Saafir, Homeliss Derilex, Mannish, Chali 2na, Charizma, The Dereliks, Ahmad, Motion Man, E-Rule, Lateef, The Atban Klann, Funkytown Pros, The Nonce, Madlib, Mystik Journeymen, Abstract Rude, etc.

Before you download these compilations, give this track a listen:

James Sumbi – Sunshine Men (1991)

And with that, I present to you: The Sunshine Men.

Side One
1. Mannish – The Impact Of My Insanity
2. Aceyalone – The Greatest Show On Earth
3. Ras Kass – Remain Anonymous
4. Mannish – Mannish (Instrumental)
5. Dereliks – Iz On Some Other….
6. Blackalicious – Count And Estimate
7. Motion Man – 93 Swing
8. Peanut Butter Wolf – The Chronicles (Instrumental)

The Pharcyde “Phriday Phun Pack #12”

Friday, May 11th, 2012

And just like that, it’s already been 12 weeks and time to wrap this series up. Along the way I’ve learned a few things. One, I always thought Slim Kid Tre and Fatlip were my favorite members. And maybe they were from the Bizarre Ride time period. But though this process I have certainly gained an incredible appreciation for Booty Brown and Imani. Two, I just have to accept that Bizzare Ride came along at just the right point in my life. No matter how badly I want a reunion or some new recording sessions to happen, Bizzare Ride will never be duplicated. Three, that the whole is greater than the sum of its parts. Four guys, four different styles, one incredible group. Plus tons of incredible producers! J-Sw!ft, LA JAY, Jay Dee and Buckwild just to name a few. And let’s not forget Quinton. He’s on his way with another J. And everything’s ok.

Here’s the final breakdown. A dope Nu-Mark remix that popped up as a b-side during the RMXXOLOGY release. Was it just not submitted in time to make the album cut? Second, I picked up this beautiful instrumental in 2006 but only recently found out that it got the full remix treatment with vocals. In the #3 position is a real treat. The “Soul Flower (Bare Bones Edit)” track is a far-from-polished project that will never be finished. Originally planned as a five song series to go with the recent “Singles Collection” box set, this remix of sorts was built using the original multitrack and it never made it past the concept stage. It was created by breaking down the beat from its dense layers into separate parts, using only one section at a time (hence the ‘bare bones’ nickname). Nothing new was added except for a few echo filters, but the powers that be weren’t feeling the idea so it got scrapped before the other four edits were begun. Next is some more Spaceboy Boogie X who has made a few appearances throughout this series. And the last track is a Mick Boogie special. From what I can remember, it was a mash-up he did after working on the promo mix for Peter Bjorn and John. And unusual pairing that he more than pulls off.

Phriday Phun Pack #12
01 The Pharcyde-4 Better Or 4 Worse (DJ Nu-Mark Remix) (2008)
02 Visioneers feat. The Pharcyde-Runnin’ (Visioneers Remix) (2007)
03 The Pharcyde-Soul Flower (Bare Bones Edit) (2011)
04 Spaceboy Boogie X feat. Booty Brown-Back & Forth (2008)
05 The Pharcyde & Peter Bjorn and John-Nothing To Pass By (Mick Boogie Mix) (2009)

And who knows, if I find more quality material down the road I’d be happy to put some more packs together.

The Pharcyde “Phriday Phun Pack #11”

Friday, May 4th, 2012

Here we go again. 2nd to last pack and I hope that everyone has been enjoying this series. First up is a SoundCloud gem from DJ Phaze (what’s up Perth?) followed by another solo track from Bootie Brown, different spelling than usual, then a collabo with a former NFL wide receiver from the Carolina Panthers. Next we come to the mystery instrumental. This one popped up on  a cd single back in 2000 and I always assumed it would have been used on Lip’s album, had it not be delayed for 5 years. Or maybe it was just an extra beat from Edy Crahp who produced a couple other tracks for Fatlip. And taking the #5 slot is nice vinyl only remix coming out of Hyogo, Japan.

Suggestions are always welcome, pheel phree to leave a comment. Although time is running out.

Phriday Phun Pack #11

02 Bootie Brown-I Smoke (2003)

04 Fatlip-Edy’s Groove (Instrumental) (2000)

The Pharcyde “Phriday Phun Pack #10”

Not too much to say about this pack. Leading off is another excellent find on SoundCloud. Artistix was kind enough to give me a nice quality file to share with everyone. He also gave me a few suggestions for what else he’d like to hear in the pack. If you like this remix, check out his other work HERE. A solo track from Imani, I don’t know about you but I’d like to hear more from Citizen Strange. A remix off the “Plain Rap” album by Scram Jones (nice list of projects he’s worked on) and another solo track, this time from Booty Brown. Rounding it out is a remix from DJ DUS (aka DJ Dusty Olivera). Not the strongest remix I’ve ever heard, but an incredibly infectious beat that has kept this remix in my rotation for years now.

Suggestions are always welcome, pheel phree to leave a comment.

The Pharcyde “Phriday Phun Pack #9”

Friday, April 20th, 2012

Just a heads up for anyone following the series, the end is near. I had originally intended to for the series to close with the release of the Bizarre Ride II The Pharcyde: The Singles Collection boxset on Record Store Day on April 21, 2012 (tomorrow!). But I started a week late and then there were too many good tracks to choose from, so pack #12 will be the last one.

First up is another brilliant find from DJ Step One, thanks for taking the time to rip an old cassette for me. Followed by a sweet remix from R&B star, Mya, and then a track I had passed over years ago. It’s amazing how dope this track is, flipping an excellent vocal sample from the Buena Vista Social Club. Why didn’t I like it 12 years ago? Next is an appearance on some Sweedish hip-hop and finally is the shining star (at least to me) of this entire project.

I spotted this remix on SoundCloud but it wasn’t available for download. So I did what any other normal Pharcyde stalker would do, I reached out to Lack Of Afro with my request. What I got back was a whole lot more. Lack Of Afro got right back to me and gave me his blessing to share it with the rest of you. Turns out it was pressed up on vinyl back in 2010, but is now out of print. All he asked was that I post all his contact info. But I dug a little deeper and Lack Of Afro has an album dropping on April 30th, go and support! While it’s certainly not T.R.O.Y. material, he just posted a promo mix for his new album. If you listen to anything outside of hip-hop, it’s a really great listen. And the quote from his website is 100% accurate: “…Adam Gibbons (aka “Lack of Afro”) combines live musicianship & top-notch studio production skills into a fresh, highly individualistic sound.”

The Pharcyde “Phriday Phun Pack #8”

Friday, April 13th, 2012

Number 8 is great! First is the real Jay Dee remix of “Runnin” which has never appeared anywhere again due to an issue with the use of a Gap Band sample. Then we got the Pharcyde appearing on some lovely Spainsh (Barcelona!) beats, followed by a real tasty blend from T.R.O.Y./Philaflava superstar, vaporized. He was kind enough to do this exclusively for my Pharcyde series. Next up is a vinyl gem from label mate Buc Whead (side note: I have a Delicious Vinyl sampler that has this listed as Buc-Whead & Fat Lip p/k/a The Horrible Bros., was there supposed to be a whole project from these 2?) and rounding it off is a sweet track produced by Kool DJ E.Q. Suggestions are always welcome, pheel phree to leave a comment.

The Pharcyde “Phriday Phun Pack #7”

Friday, April 6th, 2012

Will this be the music played during your Easter dinner? Probably not, but it’s another great pack of 5 tracks. Two smooth summertime remixes (I also enjoyed Del Gazeebo’s J5 remix), another weed smoking track, some great work (and a great album) from a couple of LA producers & DJ’s and a nice German remix from the “Plain Rap” album. Suggestions are always welcome, pheel phree to leave a comment. More Farmer Man!

The Pharcyde “Phriday Phun Pack #6”

Friday, March 30th, 2012

And just like that, it’s Phriday again. Another excellent reggae mash, a Cut Chemist b-side, an obscure track from Denmark and a very nice, little known, vinyl remix from 1993. The other choice cut on here is “Heart & Soul,” produced by none other than Buckwild. I always knew this was from the Labcabin era, but wasn’t aware that it appeared on a couple international versions. I only ever knew of “Emerald Butterfly” and “Just Don’t Matter” as the bonus tracks. Mine came from the mysterious (bootleg?) “Forever.” Suggestions are always welcome, pheel phree to leave a comment.

Five alive and some more goodness for this Phriday. One from a West Coast comp, some more heat from Germany, a random mid-late 90′s freestyle from HipHopSite (!!!!), another gem for “party rocking biznisss” from SoundCloud and a classic JST*R reggae mashup/remix (thanks to DJ Step One for the vinyl rip that I didn’t use). Suggestions are always welcome, pheel phree to leave a comment.

Another Phriday, another Pharcyde Phun Pack. More good stuff: a limited vinyl only remix straight from Germany, some sweaty soul music with Tre, a bonus cut from the excellent Stars & Stripes mash-up project, blue marbled Imani vinyl and one more from a weed/hip-hop documentary (not sure if it’s live or more of a freestyle). Suggestions are always welcome, pheel phree to leave a comment.
