Hiero Producer Series: Domino (Re-Upped)

Tuesday, April 2nd, 2013

Over the course of the next few weeks, I will be posting production compilations for all of the Hiero producers. There will be 24 volumes in all, or 2 GB worth of music, so get your external HDs ready.

First up, we got 4 volumes from one of the most underrated producers in the history of hip hop: Domino. Casual’s “Fear Itself” LP from ’94 is generally regarded as a classic, and Domino’s funk-based arsenal is one of the album’s key ingredients. He also hooked up some of the dopest beats on Del’s ’93 masterpiece “No Need For Alarm”, and he was the foremost producer on Hiero’s underrated ’98 LP “3rd Eye Vision”. Aside from his stellar contributions on the aforementioned albums, he also produced quite a few bangers of the non-album variety.

The production discography speaks for itself; Domino deserves a shitload of credit for helping to define the Hieroglyphics sound.

Roy’s West Coast Underground Volume 1 (Re-Upped)

Monday, April 1st, 2013

What’s up, TROY fans. I’ve been on hiatus for a couple months, but now I’m back in full effect. I got six volumes of my favorite early-to-mid 90s west coast underground tracks on tap, so check back regularly. You may have noticed that I have a severe east coast bias, but this is also reflected in the type of west coast hip hop that I enjoy. Before you download these compilations, give this track a listen:

James Sumbi – Sunshine Men (1991)

Hiero Producer Series: A-Plus (Re-Upped)

Monday, April 1st, 2013

Installment #2 of the Hiero Producer Series: A-Plus

Domino is generally regarded as the production king of the Hieroglyphics crew (and rightfully so), but A-Plus has always been my personal favorite. Throughout the 90s, he utilized legendary soul-jazz samples from the likes of Bob James, Grover Washington, Billy Cobham, The Crusaders, Ahmad Jamal, Freddie Hubbard, etc. The man has terrific taste in music, and that is reflected in his production discography. I guess that I’m just a huge fan of soul-jazz, though, so that would explain my preference for A-Plus production over the funk-based arsenal of Domino.

Again, make room on your external HDs, as the Hiero Producer Series will ultimately comprise 2 GB worth of music. Here are four volumes worth of A-Plus production files:

Hiero Producer Series: Casual (Re-Upped)

Sunday, March 31st, 2013

We’ll be reupping a few of our pieces in the next few days. We start with this classic we did 4 years ago.

Installment #5 of the Hiero Producer Series: Casual

Who doesn’t have talent behind the boards in the Hieroglyphics crew? I haven’t even gotten to Jay-Biz or Toure as of yet, and we’re already on installment #5.

The man behind the beat for “Catch A Bad One” is…..Casual??? When I first found out that he produced the lead single off of the “No Need For Alarm” LP, it absolutely blew my mind. If you think about it, “Catch A Bad One” is probably Del’s most well-known track outside of “Mistadobalina”, and the production is most definitely a major reason as to why that track is so popular amongst hip hop fans. The truly remarkable thing is that Cas was born in ’77 or thereabouts, so he was only in his mid-teens when he produced all of the tracks that you’ll find on volume 1, including the aforementioned “Catch A Bad One”, which was released in ’93.

Aside from his contributions on the officially-released Hiero albums, he also produced quite a few bangers of the non-album variety. The remix for “That’s How It Is” is fucking incredible, and it’s easily my favorite Casual beat. I’m also a big fan of his work on the “Wrongplace” remix, as well as the demos for “Gotta Lotta”, “Can U Feel It”, “Hydra”, etc.

Hiero Producer Series: Opio

Friday, June 5th, 2009

Installment #8 of the Hiero Producer Series: Opio

I would classify Opio as the second most soulful producer from the Hieroglyphics camp after A-Plus. He didn’t start crafting beats until ’94 or thereabouts; he has not a single credit on either of the Hiero Oldies tapes, and he didn’t contribute anything to the first Souls LP, so I’m assuming that he was influenced and/or encouraged by the other members to see what he could do behind the boards. His skills as a producer were first displayed on the sophomore Souls LP “No Man’s Land”, with “Rock It Like That” being the obvious highlight. He would then lace Del with the beat for “Love Is Worth”, which, to me, is the dopest beat on “Future Development”, and the greatest beat that Opio ever produced, period. In subsequent years, he’d go on to produce outstanding tracks such as “Unseen Hand”, “Shooting Stars”, “Birds Eye View”, Casual’s “Who Do That”, and three bangers on the ’98 Hiero family album “Third Eye Vision”, with “Oakland Blackouts” being the true standout track.

Check the audio samples and see for yourself; Opio was definitely one of the most slept-on producers in the mid-to-late 90s west coast underground hip hop scene. I feel like I’ve said similar things about all of the other Hiero producers, but hopefully, after 8 installments and 24 volumes, you’re getting a sense that the Hieroglyphics camp was truly on some other shit.

Opio – Production Files Volume 1
1. Del – Love Is Worth
2. Del – Love Is Worth (Original)
3. Souls Of Mischief – So You Wanna Be A…

Hiero Producer Series: Toure

Wednesday, June 3rd, 2009

Installment #7 of the Hiero Producer Series: Toure

Toure is the most obscure producer from the Hieroglyphics camp. Unless you’re a Hiero die-hard, I’d assume that you’ve never even heard of him, as his known production discography contains only a dozen beats. Highlights include the Casual non-album tracks “Rock On”, “That’s How It Is Pt. II”, and the original version of “Later On”. He also co-produced the “First Sermon” remix along with Snupe, and he crafted the beat for “One Life, One Love”, which was his only contribution to the ’98 Hiero family album “Third Eye Vision”. Make sure to check the audio samples.

Toure – Production Files

Hiero Producer Series: Jay-Biz

Thursday, May 28th, 2009

Installment #6 of the Hiero Producer Series: Jay-Biz

What we have here is a two volume set of tracks from yet another criminally-underrated producer in the Hieroglyphics camp. On sheer talent alone, the only Hiero producers that I’d put ahead of Jay-Biz are Domino and A-Plus. Unfortunately, Jay’s known production discography contains just over 20 beats, and half of ’em are of the non-album variety. I couldn’t even find a proper picture of him on the net, so I had to a crop a photo from “The Shamen” album cover.

Jay-Bizzy, some of you motherfuckers still don’t know who is he, so brace yourselves, ’cause he’s about to get physical – Pep Love on “The Prose Officially”

So yeah, if you still don’t know who is he, then I’d advise that you download both volumes. His standout tracks include “Freshdopedope”, the remix for “Get The Girl, Grab The Money & Run”, the unreleased Prose track “Hush”, etc. Make sure to check out the audio samples, and stay tuned for posts on Toure and Opio.

Hiero Producer Series: Snupe

Tuesday, May 19th, 2009

Installment #4 of the Hiero Producer Series: Snupe

Snupe is the oddball of the Hieroglyphics camp. He got kicked out of the group back in ’96 over “creative differences”. The Hiero crew is incredibly tight-knit, so I’m not sure how Snupe managed to piss off enough members to the point where they’d kick him out. Whose girl did he step to, and did he mean to?

You can’t front on the beats, though. Most of the tracks that he produced on his ’94 debut “Like It Should Be” are outstanding, and while he hooked up the rest of the crew with only four tracks, they’re all excellent.

Snupe – Production Files Volume 1

Hiero Producer Series: Del The Funkee Homosapien

Friday, May 15th, 2009

Installment #3 of the Hiero Producer Series: Del The Funkee Homosapien

Del is widely acknowledged as a legendary MC, but how often do you hear anything about his production skills? He’s responsible for at least a couple dozen bangers, the majority of which are of the non-album variety. In compiling these five volumes, I excluded tracks that he co-produced during the IWMBGWH era.

As far as my personal favorite is concerned, I’d have to go with “That’s When Ya Lost”. That track is a pure adrenaline rush.
