meyhem

If you’ve been following T.R.O.Y. for awhile it’s no secret we’ve been day one supporters of Meyhem Lauren, so it was only natural we ask the big homie to help set-off  Guest Blogger for ’13 with his Top 10 Grimiest NYC Tracks of All-Time.

Do yourself a favor and get acquainted with one of the realest and truest throwbacks hip-hop has today. Check out his debut double album Self Induced Illness available  on Amazon. You can also download his two must-own mixtapes Respect The Fly right here or Mandatory Brunch Meetings here. –Philaflava

10) Onyx - Walk in New York
“NYPD CAN SUCK MY DICK!”
 9) ODB – Brooklyn Zoo
Dirty sets the tone of the song from the second that it starts.
 8) Shabazz The Disciple – Crime Saga
This record is perhaps the most detailed and descriptive crime story ever. Shabazz has a flow that is unmatched on this record.
7)  Cormega Feat. Mike Delorian - Fuck Nas
Even though this track was a diss record specifically about Nas and nature it embodies the general sound of that grimy Queens NYC rap that raised me. “Fuck gold chains and sneakers I had that when cocaine was cheaper”
6) M.O.P. – Cold Word
“Slum ass wanna be hard ass nigga / cornball butter soft lard ass nigga!” Nobody keeps in grimier then Fame and Billy I could have picked 10 M.O.P. songs if I wanted to compose this list but I decided to go with this one. “It’s a cold world so bitch nigga dress warm!”
5) Tragedy Khadafi Feat. Imam Thug – True Confessions
“Clappin Co’s bustin PO’s right in their knee caps” Not only is this track a grimey NYC street life anthem but the skill level and wordplay that Trag and Imam hit you in the head with is flawless. This beat epitomizes the sound of real inner city gorilla rap.
4) 50 Cents – Thicker Then Water
”Move during the jux you know I’m gon’ shoot so you gonna pay me or the hospital duke/ don’t call me to feature I don’t wanna rap with ya I brought my knife in the club I came to scrap with ya!
3) Capone & Noreaga Bloody Money.
Even though Parole violators has the grimiest lyrics on the War Report ” Bloody Money is undisputably a NYC street anthem and should be listened to at a high volume while drinking Hennessy or cleaning a fire arm.
2)  Kool G Rap – Take ‘Em To War Feat. MF Grimm &  B One
Take em to war “Grimm gimmie the infrared and semi and I’m puttin red dots on niggas foreheads and making muthafuckas Indian you got beef go get yourself a wreath because its murder cause I put holes in my beef like fuckin white castle burgers.”
 1) Mobb Deep – Shook Ones Pt. 2
This record was special not only because the production and rhymes were flawless but because it was also a commercial success and caused a whole wave of NYC street anthems to drop soon after.

Hot 97 Radio Freestyles Pt. 5

Thursday, July 5th, 2012

Copped this pre-owned comp from my local record store for $3. The A side consists of a 13-minute freestyle session featuring DMX, Canibus and Noreaga. Oddly enough, the tracklist says it’s Nature, but it’s definitely N.O.R.E. Who else would say “Your people homos like the cat who killed Versace?” They also credit Capone and Nature as appearing on the first track on the B side, but as far as I can tell, only Nas and Noreaga are on there. It sounds like Nature was in the sesh but didn’t make the final cut when they put this to record; “they” being Wild Style Records, Ltd., about which I can tell you absolutely nothing, except that they aren’t the best (mis)spellers in the world (see “Noriega” and “Rockefella”). Here’s the tracklist as it appears on the record itself.

A1 Dmx, Canibus & Nature
B1 Nas, Nature & Capone & Noriega
B2 Craig Mack
B3 Jay-z & Rockefella Family
B4 Genovese
B5 Killah Priest

DOWNLOAD

I’ve tagged the tracks a little differently. Also, note that the exact lineup for B3 is Sauce Money followed by Da Ranjahz (Half Dead & Wais P).

“Cool, but where are Parts 1-4?” you ask. Well, some earlier volumes of this series were posted all the way back in 2009. As to whether or not they’re still stored on a hard drive somewhere, your guess is as good as mine.

Found on SoundCloud… a couple remixes

Monday, June 25th, 2012

I know this Nas track has been kicking around for a few months now, but here’s the new (official?) Massive Attack remix. Gives it a whole new vibe. I can live without anything after the 4:45 mark.

And here’s a tasty remix by Waggles. Bring the horns.

Nas “Is Coming” Promo Cassette 1996

Thursday, December 29th, 2011

Really nothing special on this promo sampler cassette. A Kid Capri Source freestyle and a couple excerpts of some tracks that didn’t make the album and took several years before they got released. But it was during the outro in the last 15 seconds of the tape that had always grabbed my attention. “And guest appearances by Lauren Hill, D’Angelo and Method Man…”

As we all know when “It Was Written” dropped, there were clearly no tracks with Method Man or D’Angelo. I (like many others) always assumed that those tracks were locked away in Nas’ vaults.

But according to DJ Mike Nice, “the Meth session in 96 never took place, Meth was to be on it was written but missed the studio session” and “D’angelo missed his session with Nas as well.”

Really?!? Kind of a disappointing end to the story. Well, here’s the promo tape. Side 2 is exactly the same as side 1, but I ripped it anyways. All scans are included in the rar file.

Nas “Memory Lane (Sittin’ In Da Park)”

Tuesday, February 8th, 2011

Stream: Nas “Memory Lane (Sittin’ In Da Park)”

Nas’s New York pride and resolve must have been piqued when he first heard Premier’s simple but elegant instrumental for the song that became “Memory Lane”; I imagine the challenge to devise the perfect rhyme for the occasion was too bewitching to pass up. The Lee Dorsey drums slam just as hard as the beats on any Superlover Cee and Casanova Rud record, while the mostly unadulterated loop of Rueben Wilson’s “We’re In Love,” —complete with its enchanting gossamer of background vocals— seems to exhale deeply as if suddenly freed from restraint by its captor.  The organ and guitar sounds pour out over the drums, tempering but not smothering their hard cracks, leaving room for Nas’s vocal layer to perform its own punctuation. I cannot fault Nas if the beat immediately inspired him to close his eyes and daydream a sprawling city block’s worth of enterprising, low-down splendor. (more…)
