Tru Comers: Vaporized Blends

Thursday, June 14th, 2012

A brand new vaporized blend project. Don’t sleep.

In case you’re not familiar with Tru Comers (aka Sperrow and X-Pert) they’re a Swiss production crew, but their sound is pure mid 90s NYC boom-bap rawness.

Hopefully I’ve managed to do some justice to their 2011 instrumental EP with these blends.

Props to Verge and dirt_dog for going out of their way to help put this together, and to Tru Comers for giving this project the all clear… Enjoy

Heltah Skeltah and Gravediggaz: Testifying Selfhood

Wednesday, November 24th, 2010

In NYC and its outlying areas during the 70s, 80s, and 90s, youth-centered organizations like The Nation of Gods and Earths1 and the Almighty Universal Zulu Nation placed varying degrees of emphasis on individual betterment. It was assumed that the adoption of healthier eating habits and the pursuit of spiritual enlightenment and intellectual stimulation could undo the damage inflicted on the individual by educational and legal institutions and the mass media. NYC-based rappers borrowed more than colloquial and stylistic elements from these groups. The notion that rapping could be ameliorative, therapeutic, or simply represent a legal form of recreation and/or commerce is partly an attempt to apply core teachings to everyday life.

An even grander notion — that participation in creative activities could reverse the defamation of inner city youths in academic journals, feature films, and hysterical news reports— sprouted from this seed, and certain rappers took it upon themselves to defend and revise the collective’s tarnished image, to testify to a greater self buried under cross-cultural misunderstanding and policies derived from essentialist theories. DJ Stretch Armstrong “Volume Four” Mixtape (1996)

Friday, April 9th, 2010

As I continue on through the box of tapes that I located in my basement, here is a semi mysterious DJ Stretch Armstrong “Volume Four” tape. I could find zero info on this one, so I turned to (the mixtape master of the Philaflava forum) Andyman187 for some help. He determined that this tape is a recording from a Stretch & Bobbito show on Hot97 that aired Sundays from 12pm-2pm sometime in 1996. Andyman187 was also kind enough to study the audio and put together a tracklist for me. If anyone out there can help by filling in the blanks or correcting any mistakes, please leave a comment. And the .rar files contain all the scans plus the full j-card.

Boot Camp Click – Duck Down Sampler VLS (1996)

Tuesday, May 26th, 2009

Here we have a rare promotional Duck Down Sampler vinyl from 1996. If you are familiar with the Headz Ain’t Ready VLS, no instrumentals were featured for the main track. Well, the sampler starts off with a dub instrumental of Headz Ain’t Ready(Original Buckshot Mix). I know some of you are already saying “why didn’t they just put the full instrumental without any vocals”, well I don’t know. The next track is Let Tha Brainz Blo (Babee Pall’s Dolla Cab Lab Mix) by Heltah Skeltah. I don’t know if this is supposed to be a Baby Paul remix but it sounds identical to the album version on Nocturnal; maybe it was released before the album? The B-Side wins again on this 12″: Boot Camp Click – Niggaz Ain’t Ready (Dirty F*cking Mix). While the original Headz Ain’t Ready 12″ version isn’t censored, instead of saying “Headz” on the chorus, it now says “Niggaz”. I believe that it is a super rare version that can only be found on this sampler which hasn’t been ripped on the blogsphere until now. Enjoy!

A1 – Boot Camp Click – Headz Ain’t Ready (Original Headz Instrumental)
A2 – Heltah Skeltah – Let Tha Brainz Blo (Babee Pall’s Dolla Cab Lab Mix)
B1 – Boot Camp Click – Niggaz Ain’t Ready (Dirty F*cking Mix)

Hot 97 Radio Freestyles (1996)

Saturday, March 14th, 2009

Here’s a bootleg 12″ that I recently picked up. It featured 5 freestyles, live & uncensored, recorded at Hot 97 in 1996. The first freestyle is a 20 minute cypher with Cappadonna, Ghostface Killah, Timbo King, and U-God. It follows with two freestyles from A Tribe Called Quest(With Consequence). The next freestyle is from Nas & Cormega. Nas was promoting “It Was Written” and Cormega had just signed to Def Jam. The last freestyle is from Ruck & Rock of Heltah Skeltah.

A1. Wu Tang Clan – Freestyle (Feat. Cappadonna, Ghostface Killah, Timbo King, & U-God)
B1. A Tribe Called Quest – Freestyle #1 (Feat. Consequence)
B2. A Tribe Called Quest – Freestyle #2 (Feat. Consequence)
B3. Nas – Freestyle (Feat. Cormega)
B4. Heltah Skeltah – Freestyle
