The Aspiring Me in New York City

Friday, April 26th, 2013

I interviewed The Aspiring Me a few weeks ago. If you missed it, you can read the interview here.

I got word that he is performing at the Tender Trap 245 S 1st Street Brooklyn, NY, via this very fluid and clear cut freestyle. In the song he also shouts out THE T.R.O.Y. BLOG and yours truly.

He really killed the beat. So much that the actual SoundCloud sound wave frequency looks like a scar on the computer screen.

There is a lot going on in this freestyle.  (more…)

The Pharcdye – 1993 Freestyle

Tuesday, January 22nd, 2013

As long as I’m on another mini Pharcyde kick, DJ Step One hit me with this Pharcyde freestyle over the weekend.

This time it’s an 8 minute freestyle session from the Kiss FM Rap Show. The sound is a little rough, but what do you expect from an almost 20 year old tape recording?

Hot 97 Radio Freestyles Pt. 5

Thursday, July 5th, 2012

Copped this pre-owned comp from my local record store for $3. The A side consists of a 13-minute freestyle session featuring DMX, Canibus and Noreaga. Oddly enough, the tracklist says it’s Nature, but it’s definitely N.O.R.E. Who else would say “Your people homos like the cat who killed Versace?” They also credit Capone and Nature as appearing on the first track on the B side, but as far as I can tell, only Nas and Noreaga are on there. It sounds like Nature was in the sesh but didn’t make the final cut when they put this to record; “they” being Wild Style Records, Ltd., about which I can tell you absolutely nothing, except that they aren’t the best (mis)spellers in the world (see “Noriega” and “Rockefella”). Here’s the tracklist as it appears on the record itself.

A1 Dmx, Canibus & Nature
B1 Nas, Nature & Capone & Noriega
B2 Craig Mack
B3 Jay-z & Rockefella Family
B4 Genovese
B5 Killah Priest

I’ve tagged the tracks a little differently. Also, note that the exact lineup for B3 is Sauce Money followed by Da Ranjahz (Half Dead & Wais P).

“Cool, but where are Parts 1-4?” you ask. Well, some earlier volumes of this series were posted all the way back in 2009. As to whether or not they’re still stored on a hard drive somewhere, your guess is as good as mine.

The Pharcyde “Phriday Phun Pack #9”

Friday, April 20th, 2012

Just a heads up for anyone following the series, the end is near. I had originally intended to for the series to close with the release of the Bizarre Ride II The Pharcyde: The Singles Collection boxset on Record Store Day on April 21, 2012 (tomorrow!). But I started a week late and then there were too many good tracks to choose from, so pack #12 will be the last one.

First up is another brilliant find from DJ Step One, thanks for taking the time to rip an old cassette for me. Followed by a sweet remix from R&B star, Mya, and then a track I had passed over years ago. It’s amazing how dope this track is, flipping an excellent vocal sample from the Buena Vista Social Club. Why didn’t I like it 12 years ago? Next is an appearance on some Sweedish hip-hop and finally is the shining star (at least to me) of this entire project.

I spotted this remix on SoundCloud but it wasn’t available for download. So I did what any other normal Pharcyde stalker would do, I reached out to Lack Of Afro with my request. What I got back was a whole lot more. Lack Of Afro got right back to me and gave me his blessing to share it with the rest of you. Turns out it was pressed up on vinyl back in 2010, but is now out of print. All he asked was that I post all his contact info. But I dug a little deeper and Lack Of Afro has an album dropping on April 30th, go and support! While it’s certainly not T.R.O.Y. material, he just posted a promo mix for his new album. If you listen to anything outside of hip-hop, it’s a really great listen. And the quote from his website is 100% accurate: “…Adam Gibbons (aka “Lack of Afro”) combines live musicianship & top-notch studio production skills into a fresh, highly individualistic sound.”

The Pharcyde “Phriday Phun Pack #6”

Friday, March 30th, 2012

And just like that, it’s Phriday again. Another excellent reggae mash, a Cut Chemist b-side, an obscure track from Denmark and a very nice, little known, vinyl remix from 1993. The other choice cut on here is “Heart & Soul,” produced by none other than Buckwild. I always knew this was from the Labcabin era, but wasn’t aware that it appeared on a couple international versions. I only ever knew of “Emerald Butterfly” and “Just Don’t Matter” as the bonus tracks. Mine came from the mysterious (bootleg?) “Forever.” Suggestions are always welcome, pheel phree to leave a comment.

The Pharcyde “Phriday Phun Pack #5”

Friday, March 23rd, 2012

Five alive and some more goodness for this Phriday. One from a West Coast comp, some more heat from Germany, a random mid-late 90’s freestyle from HipHopSite (!!!!), another gem for “party rocking biznisss” from SoundCloud and a classic JST*R reggae mashup/remix (thanks to DJ Step One for the vinyl rip that I didn’t use). Suggestions are always welcome, pheel phree to leave a comment.

T.R.O.Y.’s Unofficial Wu-Wednesday (Week 11)

Wednesday, February 9th, 2011

A vintage session from the Wu Tang Klann. Based on the spelling and quality of this vinyl, all signs point to bootleg. Still, nice to hear a young Clan freestyling and clowning around for 40 minutes (Tim Westwood Show?). And Meth is certainly the star of this show.
