T.R.O.Y. Presents – Sounds Like The 90s Vol. 24

Tuesday, August 16th, 2016

We create these Sounds Like The 90s, to share with you new(er) tunes, that we feel represent that 90s hip-hop we love. Listen with an open mind and most importantly, support the artists featured on these Sounds Like The 90s if you like what you hear. 24 is a great number, my favorite number for obvious reasons, so it only made sense to incorporate my childhood idol Rickey Henderson on the cover. Props to dirt_dog for always blessing the artwork. And if you’re a fan of his work, you’ll be happy to know our Certified Dope Apparel is back for a limited time as well. Peace to to all those who continue to support Philaflava, Steady Bloggin and of course, T.R.O.Y.   –Jason Gloss

Jim Sharp “ATCQ Midnight Marauders Revisited EP”

    Saturday, November 9th, 2013

    MM Revisited EP 450

Jim Sharp, one of my new favorite deejay/producer/chief rocka/b-ball heads, reached out to me and blessed the T.R.O.Y. Blog with this exclusive piece. I don’t have much to say, other than it’s an absolute MUST download.

“On November 9th 1993 A Tribe Called Quest’s ‘Midnight Marauders’ dropped. ATCQ was and still is my favourite rap group and listening to Marauders now, it seems incredible how it’s endured the test of time. With the advancement of technology it has been possible to attain previously unreleased vocals and with this in mind I started to rebuild tracks from Marauders from their original samples. (it’s important to note that technology has only moved so far and the majority of vocals were impossible to get) I took a lot of time to imagine how Q-tip would have captured the samples, probably using a turntable and an MPC. Consciously not using pitch correct, sampling one side of the audio and bouncing it to stereo and continually trying to get the right filter, echo, pitch and sound from the original sample. I also re-imagined big sections of tracks paying homage to some of my favourite producers such as Premier, DJ Shadow, 9th Wonder and Large Professor. I thought about what it would have been like to have some legends of the game such as Biggie, Nas and Biz Markie dropping guest verses next to Tip and Phife. I completely understand how dear Tribe fans hold Marauders and it was important to me that it had a fresh take but stayed true to the original ethos. This was a labour of love and I hope people dig it for what it is.” – Jim Sharp

“3 Feet High and Rising” remade by United States of Audio

    Friday, May 24th, 2013

    usoa-de la-450

    Best mix of 2013? Yes.

    Following on from last year’s treatment of ‘Paul’s Boutique‘, United States of Audio does the same with De la Soul’s groundbreaking album 3 Feet High and Rising. It’s not just a mix, but more like an audio documentary about an album that is also about to celebrate it’s 25th anniversary. In his own words;

‘Several years in the making and including around 100 tracks, this is my personal tribute to De La Soul’s ‘3 Feet High and Rising’. Using original sample sources, album tracks, interviews and rarities, ‘How High’s The Water Mama’ tells the story of one of hip hop’s most influential albums.

When De La Soul’s debut album dropped in 1989 I was ten years old. Yet, by some stroke of amazing good fortune a cassette copy of ‘3 Feet High and Rising’ found its way into my hands thanks to my best mate’s older brother (though I’m pretty sure said brother had no idea of this fact!). The music was a revelation and had a significant influence in shaping my musical tastes – in fact I can’t think of any other album that has had such a profound effect on me as this one. Thus ‘3 Feet High and Rising’ holds a special place in my musical affections. Now, some twenty-five years after its original release, it’s time to pay my respect to Pos, Dove, Mase, and Prince Paul…’

Go to the SoundCloud page for the full track list and to download, it’s mad long. Thanks to Kev and Megatrip for the link.

DJ Cesare – Public Enemy White Label Turntable Megamix (1987)

    Friday, April 12th, 2013

Because it’s Friday and because it’s incredibly dope.

from DJ Cesare: My 1987 white label turntable megamix of Public Enemy’s first album ‘Yo! Bum Rush The Show.’

I know I grabbed this vinyl off of another blog several years ago, and this is only side a. Maybe Cesare will post side b too. Released as a white label promo in 1988. Drop were DJ Cesare with engineer Pete Smith. It was recorded “live” using only 2 turntables and a mixer, layering beats and scratches onto an 8 track tape machine in Gee Street Records’ basement. Thanks to Striclty Kev and Megatrip for pointing this one out.

    Ras Kass – Non-Album Tracks (1994-1996) (Re-Upped)

    Tuesday, April 2nd, 2013

Editor’s Note: Back by popular demand

Ras Kass is easily one of my favorite MCs of all time, but I’m mostly just a fan of his mid-90s discography. Fortunately, he recorded quite a few tracks in between the years of 1994 and 1996, and he also blessed several radio shows with ill pre-written freestyles. Three volumes worth of non-album tracks is no small feat – that’s more than Organized Konfusion had in between the years of 1989 and 1998.

I have also included a “Soul On Ice” instrumental companion as a bonus. Enjoy, and hit us up in the comments section if you have anything that isn’t included here. There’s an alternate version of “Won’t Catch Me Runnin” that I was hoping would surface before the completion of this post, but nobody seems to have it.

DJ Nu-Mark’s Vinyl Collection (Crate Diggers on fuse TV)

    Thursday, February 21st, 2013

I’ve been a fan of Nu-Mark since the days of Jurassic 5. He’s done a bunch of great solo work and mixes over the years, but I was really into him last year when he was releasing all the singles leading up to his Broken Sunlight album. Thanks King!

Found on SoundCloud… a few remixes

    Wednesday, February 20th, 2013

It seems as of late I’ve been spending a large amount of my day cruising SoundCloud. Here are a few picks of things I’ve been enjoying.
