Ras Kass – Non-Album Tracks (1994-1996) (Re-Upped)

Tuesday, April 2nd, 2013

Editor’s Note: Back by popular demand

Ras Kass is easily one of my favorite MCs of all time, but I’m mostly just a fan of his mid-90s discography. Fortunately, he recorded quite a few tracks in between the years of 1994 and 1996, and he also blessed several radio shows with ill pre-written freestyles. Three volumes worth of non-album tracks is no small feat – that’s more than Organized Konfusion had in between the years of 1989 and 1998.

I have also included a “Soul On Ice” instrumental companion as a bonus. Enjoy, and hit us up in the comments section if you have anything that isn’t included here. There’s an alternate version of “Won’t Catch Me Runnin” that I was hoping would surface before the completion of this post, but nobody seems to have it.

Ras Kass – Non-Album Tracks Volume 1
1. Live From C-Arson
2. Remain Anonymous
3. Etc (Extended Version)
4. Won’t Catch Me Runnin’
5. Riiiot! w/ Chino XL
6. Come Widdit w/ Saafir & Ahmad
7. Plastic Surgery w/ Xzibit & Saafir
8. Arch Angels w/ Xzibit
9. E=MC5 w/ Western Hemisfear
10. Jack Frost
11. Soul On Ice (Remix)
12. Anything Goes (Remix)
13. Won’t Catch Me Runnin’ (Remix)
14. On Earth As It Is… (Vaporized Blend)

Hiero Producer Series: Domino (Re-Upped)

Tuesday, April 2nd, 2013

Over the course of the next few weeks, I will be posting production compilations for all of the Hiero producers. There will be 24 volumes in all, or 2 GB worth of music, so get your external HDs ready.

First up, we got 4 volumes from one of the most underrated producers in the history of hip hop: Domino. Casual’s “Fear Itself” LP from ’94 is generally regarded as a classic, and Domino’s funk-based arsenal is one of the album’s key ingredients. He also hooked up some of the dopest beats on Del’s ’93 masterpiece “No Need For Alarm”, and he was the foremost producer on Hiero’s underrated ’98 LP “3rd Eye Vision”. Aside from his stellar contributions on the aforementioned albums, he also produced quite a few bangers of the non-album variety.

The production discography speaks for itself; Domino deserves a shitload of credit for helping to define the Hieroglyphics sound.

Hiero Producer Series: A-Plus (Re-Upped)

Monday, April 1st, 2013

Installment #2 of the Hiero Producer Series: A-Plus

Domino is generally regarded as the production king of the Hieroglyphics crew (and rightfully so), but A-Plus has always been my personal favorite. Throughout the 90s, he utilized legendary soul-jazz samples from the likes of Bob James, Grover Washington, Billy Cobham, The Crusaders, Ahmad Jamal, Freddie Hubbard, etc. The man has terrific taste in music, and that is reflected in his production discography. I guess that I’m just a huge fan of soul-jazz, though, so that would explain my preference for A-Plus production over the funk-based arsenal of Domino.

Again, make room on your external HDs, as the Hiero Producer Series will ultimately comprise 2 GB worth of music. Here are four volumes worth of A-Plus production files:

Hiero Producer Series: Casual (Re-Upped)

Sunday, March 31st, 2013

We’ll be reupping a few of our pieces in the next few days. We start with this classic we did 4 years ago.

Installment #5 of the Hiero Producer Series: Casual

Who doesn’t have talent behind the boards in the Hieroglyphics crew? I haven’t even gotten to Jay-Biz or Toure as of yet, and we’re already on installment #5.

The man behind the beat for “Catch A Bad One” is…..Casual??? When I first found out that he produced the lead single off of the “No Need For Alarm” LP, it absolutely blew my mind. If you think about it, “Catch A Bad One” is probably Del’s most well-known track outside of “Mistadobalina”, and the production is most definitely a major reason as to why that track is so popular amongst hip hop fans. The truly remarkable thing is that Cas was born in ’77 or thereabouts, so he was only in his mid-teens when he produced all of the tracks that you’ll find on volume 1, including the aforementioned “Catch A Bad One”, which was released in ’93.

Aside from his contributions on the officially-released Hiero albums, he also produced quite a few bangers of the non-album variety. The remix for “That’s How It Is” is fucking incredible, and it’s easily my favorite Casual beat. I’m also a big fan of his work on the “Wrongplace” remix, as well as the demos for “Gotta Lotta”, “Can U Feel It”, “Hydra”, etc.

Casual – Production Files Volume 1
1. Pep Love, Casual & Jay-Biz – It Gets No Better

In Loving Memory of Russell Jones

Friday, November 16th, 2012

It was an eventful week in hip-hop. Between the new releases from Roc Marciano, Action Bronson and Captain Murphy, you’d be forgiven for forgetting that Tuesday November 13 marked the eighth anniversary of ODB’s death or that yesterday would’ve been his 42nd birthday. Likewise, you’ll forgive us for not putting a memorial post together in time for either of these dates.

Apology accepted? Good, now let’s get on with the show.

In Loving Memory of Russell Jones is a double CD compilation arranged and sequenced by Dreddy Kruger. Released on Sandbox Automatic (and maybe a few other sites), it came packed with a t-shirt bearing the same artwork as the cover above. Comprised of everything from hit singles and Wu-Tang cuts to random guess spots, radio freestyles and of course classic skits, this out-of-print 45-track release is not to be missed. Disc 1 / Disc 2

When you’re done with that, be sure to check out G. Brown Presents Legend of the Drunken Master, a best-of mixtape that was also included in the deal mentioned above. Apart from the standard ODB fare, it features several DJ remixes (some banging acappella-instrumental blends) and two unreleased songs: “Don’t Go Breaking My Heart” featuring Macy Grae, and an original version of the classic Wu-Tang Forever joint “Reunited,” on which ODB spits an entirely different verse than the one that made the album cut.

As the God said unto his hos, “YOU THINK WE DON’T LOVE YOU MOTHERFUCKERS?!”

Schoolly D Instrumentals 101

Friday, September 14th, 2012

Alright yo, sit the fuck down, class is in session, bitch!

Widely acknowledged as the original gangsta rapper, Schoolly D is best known for his wildly humorous, pornographically sexual and wantonly violent lyrics. Still, despite all the attention his words have received over the years, few people recognize just how great of a musician he truly is. In exploring Schoolly’s catalogue and researching his place in hip-hop history, I’ve found that his rhymes have almost always overshadowed his beats (all of which he either produced or co-produced). I understand why they’re overlooked, but it’s ironic for several reasons:

1) His first single included a five and a half minute song that wasn’t an instrumental version of another cut but was still almost entirely rap-less. 2) As I said before and please correct me if I’m wrong, but aside from remixes and maybe a few DJ-showcase tracks, he produced or co-produced every song that ever appeared on one of his albums, which is basically unheard of for anyone, let alone someone who’s been making music for nearly 30 years. 3) To put it bluntly, his beats are fucking dope… I mean all of them… incredibly so… and while his rhymes could conceivably be dismissed as overly simple (especially if you’re a dumb motherfucker), his beats are often pretty damn complex.

Usually danceable, sometimes cinematic, always uniquely funky, Schoolly D’s production has evolved over time, setting trends and adapting to changes in the hip-hop soundscape. Even between his first two singles, Gangster Boogie / Maniac and P.S.K. What Does it Mean? / Gucci Time, there is a huge difference in styles. While the first is very much indebted to the whole Bambaataa electro-funk sound of the late ‘70s and early ‘80s, the second — though released only a year later, in 1985 — is already looking ahead to the boom-bap sound typically associated with the so-called golden era of the late ‘80s and early ‘90s. Jump ahead another year to 1986’s Saturday Night and Schoolly’s experimenting with polyrhythmic syncopation. Fast-forward to 1989’s Living In The Jungle / Gucci Again and 1990’s King of New York, and although he’s still within the lane he’d built for himself years earlier, he’s now beginning to foreshadow the dusty minimalism that would rise to popularity around 93/94.

One could argue that Schoolly D’s production was simply ahead of its time. I’m willing to take that a step further and say that by being simultaneously ahead of its time and of its time, his production represents an unacknowledged link in the chain connecting hip-hop’s various eras. I put this compilation together in hopes of bringing listeners to a better appreciation and understanding of Schoolly D, the producer; because though I’m not one for making lists, as far as I’m concerned, he’s definitely one of the Top 10 hip-hop producers of all time… Top 3 when it comes to rapper/producers.

Now go do your homework. (Bump this motherfucker, read all that shit if you haven’t already, and leave a comment letting us know what you think, ho.)

1. Maniac
2. Parkside 5-2

Hot 97 Radio Freestyles Pt. 5

Thursday, July 5th, 2012

Copped this pre-owned comp from my local record store for $3. The A side consists of a 13-minute freestyle session featuring DMX, Canibus and Noreaga. Oddly enough, the tracklist says it’s Nature, but it’s definitely N.O.R.E. Who else would say “Your people homos like the cat who killed Versace?” They also credit Capone and Nature as appearing on the first track on the B side, but as far as I can tell, only Nas and Noreaga are on there. It sounds like Nature was in the sesh but didn’t make the final cut when they put this to record; “they” being Wild Style Records, Ltd., about which I can tell you absolutely nothing, except that they aren’t the best (mis)spellers in the world (see “Noriega” and “Rockefella”). Here’s the tracklist as it appears on the record itself.

A1 Dmx, Canibus & Nature
B1 Nas, Nature & Capone & Noriega
B2 Craig Mack
B3 Jay-z & Rockefella Family
B4 Genovese
B5 Killah Priest

DOWNLOAD

I’ve tagged the tracks a little differently. Also, note that the exact lineup for B3 is Sauce Money followed by Da Ranjahz (Half Dead & Wais P).

“Cool, but where are Parts 1-4?” you ask. Well, some earlier volumes of this series were posted all the way back in 2009. As to whether or not they’re still stored on a hard drive somewhere, your guess is as good as mine.

T&B Presents… Heroes In Your Headphones

Tuesday, June 12th, 2012

Tired & Broke from the Philaflava forum posted a nice new comic and video game themed compilation this morning. Here’s what he had to say:

With the conclusion of E3 2012 last week and Comic-Con 2012 about a month away (and to try to bring more traffic to Electric Relaxation) I figured now would be a great time to drop this mix since gaming and comics are fresh on everyone’s mind.

It’s no secret the subject of Comics and Video Games have been a heavy subject matter and source of inspiration in the world of Hip-Hop for over 2 decades. There’s been entire soundtracks dedicated to it, and several independent artists have made “theme” albums based around a sole Character. Other artists have successfully based the majority of their career around Comic Book characters; Hero and Villain alike.

“T&B Presents… Heroes In Your Headphones” is a custom soundtrack I made of a collection of songs based around the theme of Hip-Hop, Comics and Video Games. Whether its the main topic of the song or the track has sampled elements from a gaming franchise or comic book cartoon series.

Enjoy.

PS: Mega Shoutout to the homey dirt_dog on the custom cover!! Son put in work in a short amount of time and looked out in a major way.
