T.R.O.Y. & Certified Dope Apparel Present – Sounds Like The 90′s Vol. 22

    Friday, September 20th, 2013

It’s been a constant struggle to produce these lately, manly because I always feel I’m at an impasse with the selections. Is it too new sounding? Is it too dated? Is the quality of the mp3 good? Then of course, there is always, isn’t this track kinda played out by now?

I know it’s hard to believe, but I really do put in work selecting, sequencing and creating the overall package for your CD-r or iTunes. This time around T.R.O.Y. and Certified Dope Apparel bring you volume 22, a compilation that features a collection of tracks that we feel exemplifies just how great hip-hop has been, even if a few joints are slightly aged by now.

15+ years ago Ecko used to give mixtapes out with the purchase of their clothes. I never did rock much Ecko, but I made sure to rock those mixtapes. It was an ingenious idea by Mark Milecofsky Mark Ecko. Now 100 million dollars later you have Eckō Unltd. Not that we’re expecting to reach those levels but we feel we have something special with these 3 great collaborative shirts with Certified Dope. And of course, purchase or no purchase, we hope you enjoy our latest offering,  the Sounds Like The 90′s Vol. 22 .

Vol. 22 takes us back in time, so extract the file, burn to a disc (56 mins total) or add to your playlist. Spread the word, spread the file and let’s celebrate hip-hop music.  I hope you enjoy Sounds Like The 90′s as much as I do creating them, even if it’s sometimes a challenge. –PhilaflavabomockbiggercousinmockbiggersologreymockbiggersolotankbiggerCLICK HERE TO ENTER STORE

    Ras Kass – Non-Album Tracks (1994-1996) (Re-Upped)

    Tuesday, April 2nd, 2013

Editor’s Note: Back by popular demand

Ras Kass is easily one of my favorite MCs of all time, but I’m mostly just a fan of his mid-90s discography. Fortunately, he recorded quite a few tracks in between the years of 1994 and 1996, and he also blessed several radio shows with ill pre-written freestyles. Three volumes worth of non-album tracks is no small feat – that’s more than Organized Konfusion had in between the years of 1989 and 1998.

I have also included a “Soul On Ice” instrumental companion as a bonus. Enjoy, and hit us up in the comments section if you have anything that isn’t included here. There’s an alternate version of “Won’t Catch Me Runnin” that I was hoping would surface before the completion of this post, but nobody seems to have it.

    Ras Kass – Non-Album Tracks Volume 1
    1. Live From C-Arson
    2. Remain Anonymous
    3. Etc (Extended Version)

    Hiero Producer Series: Domino (Re-Upped)

    Tuesday, April 2nd, 2013

Over the course of the next few weeks, I will be posting production compilations for all of the Hiero producers. There will be 24 volumes in all, or 2 GB worth of music, so get your external HDs ready.

First up, we got 4 volumes from one of the most underrated producers in the history of hip hop: Domino. Casual’s “Fear Itself” LP from ’94 is generally regarded as a classic, and Domino’s funk-based arsenal is one of the album’s key ingredients. He also hooked up some of the dopest beats on Del’s ’93 masterpiece “No Need For Alarm”, and he was the foremost producer on Hiero’s underrated ’98 LP “3rd Eye Vision”. Aside from his stellar contributions on the aforementioned albums, he also produced quite a few bangers of the non-album variety.

The production discography speaks for itself; Domino deserves a shitload of credit for helping to define the Hieroglyphics sound.

    Hiero Producer Series: A-Plus (Re-Upped)

    Monday, April 1st, 2013

Installment #2 of the Hiero Producer Series: A-Plus

Domino is generally regarded as the production king of the Hieroglyphics crew (and rightfully so), but A-Plus has always been my personal favorite. Throughout the 90s, he utilized legendary soul-jazz samples from the likes of Bob James, Grover Washington, Billy Cobham, The Crusaders, Ahmad Jamal, Freddie Hubbard, etc. The man has terrific taste in music, and that is reflected in his production discography. I guess that I’m just a huge fan of soul-jazz, though, so that would explain my preference for A-Plus production over the funk-based arsenal of Domino.

Again, make room on your external HDs, as the Hiero Producer Series will ultimately comprise 2 GB worth of music. Here are four volumes worth of A-Plus production files:

    A-Plus – Production Files Volume 1

    Hiero Producer Series: Casual (Re-Upped)

    Sunday, March 31st, 2013

We’ll be reupping a few of our pieces in the next few days. We start with this classic we did 4 years ago.

Installment #5 of the Hiero Producer Series: Casual

Who doesn’t have talent behind the boards in the Hieroglyphics crew? I haven’t even gotten to Jay-Biz or Toure as of yet, and we’re already on installment #5.

The man behind the beat for “Catch A Bad One” is…..Casual??? When I first found out that he produced the lead single off of the “No Need For Alarm” LP, it absolutely blew my mind. If you think about it, “Catch A Bad One” is probably Del’s most well-known track outside of “Mistadobalina”, and the production is most definitely a major reason as to why that track is so popular amongst hip hop fans. The truly remarkable thing is that Cas was born in ’77 or thereabouts, so he was only in his mid-teens when he produced all of the tracks that you’ll find on volume 1, including the aforementioned “Catch A Bad One”, which was released in ’93.

Aside from his contributions on the officially-released Hiero albums, he also produced quite a few bangers of the non-album variety. The remix for “That’s How It Is” is fucking incredible, and it’s easily my favorite Casual beat. I’m also a big fan of his work on the “Wrongplace” remix, as well as the demos for “Gotta Lotta”, “Can U Feel It”, “Hydra”, etc.

Casual – Production Files Volume 1
    1. Pep Love, Casual & Jay-Biz – It Gets No Better
    2. Pep Love & Jay-Biz – The Orgy
    3. Casual – Gotta Lotta
    4. Casual – Can U Feel It
    5. Casual – Where They At

In Loving Memory of Russell Jones

    Friday, November 16th, 2012

It was an eventful week in hip-hop. Between the new releases from Roc Marciano, Action Bronson and Captain Murphy, you’d be forgiven for forgetting that Tuesday November 13 marked the eighth anniversary of ODB’s death or that yesterday would’ve been his 42nd birthday. Likewise, you’ll forgive us for not putting a memorial post together in time for either of these dates.

Apology accepted? Good, now let’s get on with the show.

In Loving Memory of Russell Jones is a double CD compilation arranged and sequenced by Dreddy Kruger. Released on Sandbox Automatic (and maybe a few other sites), it came packed with a t-shirt bearing the same artwork as the cover above. Comprised of everything from hit singles and Wu-Tang cuts to random guess spots, radio freestyles and of course classic skits, this out-of-print 45-track release is not to be missed. Disc 1 / Disc 2

When you’re done with that, be sure to check out G. Brown Presents Legend of the Drunken Master, a best-of mixtape that was also included in the deal mentioned above. Apart from the standard ODB fare, it features several DJ remixes (some banging acappella-instrumental blends) and two unreleased songs: “Don’t Go Breaking My Heart” featuring Macy Grae, and an original version of the classic Wu-Tang Forever joint “Reunited,” on which ODB spits an entirely different verse than the one that made the album cut.

As the God said unto his hos, “YOU THINK WE DON’T LOVE YOU MOTHERFUCKERS?!”
