MC Shan vs. Marley Marl

Sunday, January 15th, 2012

Shan sets the record straight on why he wasn’t on The Symphony. Marley’s response is below but he ain’t saying nothing really to dispute what Shan said. All I know is, Marley has had way too many shady dealings following him throughout his career. Not giving credit. Not paying artists. He is a legend so most people don’t care, but I bet K-Def has stories for days too. –Philaflava

Big Daddy Kane – Documentary (45 mins)

Tuesday, June 28th, 2011

Another treat from the T.R.O.Y. forum. I have no idea how this turned out or when this is officially dropping but if Michael Rapaport can do a film on A Tribe Called Quest, then surely somebody can do something on the Juice Crew. Peace to fatboybrandon for the post as well as Blackout Hip-Hop too. –Philaflava

Super Saturdays: Posse Cuts (Boot Camp, Shyheim, Chubb Rock, Heavy D & Bas Blasta)

Saturday, November 20th, 2010

If you’re like me, you have a weakness for posse cuts. There is something about the pairing of different emcees together that always sparks my interest. Sometimes the collaborations are immaculate, sometimes in-congruent but many times they’re just flat out intriguing.

Posse Cuts can create careers in just 16 bars. Verses become memorable, some undeniable classics like Kane on The Symphony, Busta on The Scenario or even Prodigy on I Shot Ya (Remix). These records define an era. When an emcee went for theirs. When there was no last-minute editing so you don’t get out shined on your own shit. If you did, you did back then. Friends, favors and fun. That is what made up the posse cuts of the 90s. Whether you were label mates, crew members, weed carriers or just fans of a specific artists you reached out because you wanted to create something, not sell a record.

After the jump are 5 tracks that capture everything that you’d could ever want from posse cut. No these aren’t the greatest of them, some are truly great though. These are 5 unique posse cuts that remind you just how much fun hip-hop can be.  (more…)

D-Nice Television: True Hip Hop Stories Pt. 2

Saturday, August 21st, 2010

This is nothing else than amazing footage.

We have used only one interview so far from D-Nice TV, and was an interview with Dres, during our Native Tongue month.
Well now it’s about time point you, if you haven’t seen it so far, with all of those amazing interview, which will bring you back in the days for a minute.
Enjoy and thanks to D-Nice for this footage and we can only say, keep ‘em coming.
“This is the story of a homeless rapper I met on the streets of Brooklyn. I feel for him because it’s quite obvious he suffered a great deal as a child. I don’t agree with how he lived his life but everyone deserves to be forgiven”.

Step One “Illegal Remixes Vol. 1” (2010)

Thursday, January 14th, 2010

It appears that good things can happen when the UK gets blasted with the heaviest snow in 100 years. With the country coming to a complete halt, forum regular Step One had time to put together this sweet compilation of bootleg remixes and blends. Show some appreciation by leaving a comment (or a link to another remix) and he might bless us with volume 2.

Step One says “A staple of any nineties Hip Hop DJ’s collection is the shady white label remix. Information on whoever was putting these out was usually pretty thin on the ground for obvious reasons but they often held some real gems. Having rediscovered some of these recently I’ve put together a collection of some of those unofficial remixes as well as a few that I’ve found on the blogs and forums over the last few years.”

01 2Pac-Old School (B.Cause Remix)
http://diamondsinthedust.blogspot.com/
Usually the non-Pac fans favourite Pac track. B Cause throws some familiar samples under Pac’s reminiscing of 80s NY and gives it a nice funky vibe.

02 Big Daddy Kane-Set It Off (Daily Diggers Remix)
http://www.dailydiggers.com/
Some of you might recognise this from DJ Mike Nice’s ‘Brooklyn Bullshit’ mixtape. The UK’s Daily Diggers flip the Cold Chillin classic.

03 Big Pun & Fat Joe-Twinz (Brooklyn Untouched Remix)
This remix discards the original ‘Deep Cover’ beat and replaces it with another Dre & Snoop collabo, ‘The Next Episode’. Always goes down well in a club set.

04 Common-I Used To Love Her (Sir Charles Flavour Remix)
http://www.myspace.com/djsircharles
Common gets a G-Funk makeover as his vocals are dropped over Warren G’s ‘Nobody Does It Better’.

05 D&D All-Stars-1,2 Pass It (Bootleg Remix)
A DJ Fashion remix? All signs point to yes.

06 Erick Sermon-Bomdigi (Street Jam Bootleg Remix)
The beat from En Vogue’s ‘Hold On’ gives this E Double solo joint some extra bump.

07 Fat Joe & Doo Wop-Boriquas On The Set (DJ Dough & Porge One Remix)
http://www.myspace.com/djdoughhiphop
The UK’s Dough & Porge One always had some special remixes on their CDs. This one is taken from their ‘Heads Aint Ready’ mix which is well worth seeking out.

08 Method Man & Redman-How High (Bootleg Remix)
The acapella of this track was definitely a favourite amongst producers, probably due to the amount of quotable lines from Red & Meth at their peak. This version uses the ‘Human Nature’ melody over EPMD’s ‘You’re A Customer’ beat.

09 Mobb Deep-Hell On Earth (Paul Miles Remix)
Another UK remix, this time by Birmingham DJ Paul Miles (aka Pat Bateman).

10 Nas-It Aint Hard To Tell (DJ Day Remix)
http://likeathrottle.blogspot.com/ (this also came out on vinyl)
This track has been remixed to death but this has to be the best of the unofficial ones. Quality production from DJ Day out of California.

11 The Pharcyde-Passin Me By (WAR! [What-A-Remix])
A Jazzy Jim remix.

12 Tim Dog & KRS-One-I Get Wrecked (Gamm/Samoo Remix)
http://diamondsinthedust.blogspot.com/
I don’t have any info on this one but I’m pretty sure I copped it at B.Cause’s blog.

13 Uptown-Dope On Plastic (B.Cause Why Zee Refix)
http://diamondsinthedust.blogspot.com/
Uptown meets YZ.

How To Rap: The Art And Science of The Hip-Hop MC

Friday, January 8th, 2010

We typically don’t cover books on T.R.O.Y., but this particular one stood out. The guest list is pretty impressive and I must say I’m a sucker for any rap books too. And you get a foreword by G. Rap? I’m reading that for sure! I plan on copping this but if any of you have already read How To Rap, definitely let us know what you think. –Philaflava

Out now is a book on MCing and creating Hip-Hop music told through the words of over 100 of Hip-Hop’s most acclaimed and successful artists. The book is called “How to Rap: The Art & Science of the Hip-Hop MC” and features a foreword by Kool G Rap, along with exclusive insights and guidance from the likes of Big Daddy Kane, Chuck D, Masta Ace, Mobb Deep, Clipse, A Tribe Called Quest, Styles P, Pharaohe Monch, Royce Da 5’9”, AZ, Boot Camp Clik, Immortal Technique, and many more.

They share the stories behind writing and recording their lyrics, as well as discussing the pros and cons of everything from writing lyrics in your head to doing punch-ins to tackling different types of subject matter.

It also includes the first complete breakdown of rap’s “flow”, allowing you to create tongue-twisting compound rhyme styles like Kool G Rap and Eminem, complex conversational flows like Nas and OC, the classic old school patterns of Melle Mel, and everything in between.

It has been called “a vital and vibrant expose of a much misunderstood art form” by Hip Hop Connection magazine, and dubcnn.com says “never before has the art form been broken down so well”.

Available at all good bookstores, or from amazon.com at –

DJ Mister Cee “The Best Of Jay-Z”

Thursday, June 11th, 2009

Here it is, the final installment of the DJ Mister Cee “Best Of” mixtape series. Although Jigga-Man is not one of my favorite artists, I thought it was very important to present the entire library. My review wasn’t going so well, but I think turntablelab says it best in the following two blurbs:

“Mister Cee goes in hard (Aquaman style!) for this comprehensive and really fascinating career-spanning Jigga collection. Starting way back with the Big Jaz collabs and freestyles, Cee forgoes chronological worries and moves in for the kill, dropping track after track of classic Jigga, from “Hawaiin Sophie”(!) to “Hard Knock Life.” Even the most studious of Jay fans will find new shit on this one: rare early tracks, remixes and unreleased freestyles from Cee’s vault all surface here. You know this shit is made by an insider when there are tracks with titles like “Freestyle – Live at Big Daddy Kane’s Movie Release Party at The Ritz (1993).” Considering the age of some of these, this sound quality on this mix is pretty incredible. 36 tracks total. Recommended.”

“Part 2 of Go-In Brother #1′s Jigga retrospective focuses mainly on collaborations and the Roc-A-Fella era. Impossibly rare, hard-to-find and flat out unreleased tracks make their way into Mr. Cee’s crate – check young Shawn Carter’s “St. Ides Commercial,” or “Roc-A-Fella Shit,” which features the entire original Roc lineup (Jaz, Sauce, Bleek, Ranjahz, Diamonds, what!). Other highlights are “Young G’s” with Biggie and Puff, and the unreleased solo joint “People’s Court.” Mister Cee has done the rap world a nice service by unleashing this shit. 25 tracks total.”
