Take It Personal (Ep 28: Respond / React)

Tuesday, June 12th, 2018

On episode 28, we discuss beef. Today’s beef ain’t what it used to be, so like Biggie said “What’s beef?” Pusha T vs. Drake is fun, but we remind you of when these battles meant something. And speaking of reminding, it’s time we remind everyone that Black Thought being a top 5 is no longer up for discussion. Seasons change mad things rearrange and with this summer heat we had to lace you with classics from Naughty By Nature, Heavy D, Slum Village, O.C., Main Source, Cypress Hill, KMD, Jay-Z, Big Daddy Kane and you know no TIP episode is complete without a DJ 360 remix! We also have new joints from Pusha T, Black Thought, J. Cole, Forever M.C. and an exclusive by Vanderslice & Conway.

Producer extraordinaire and professional feelings hurter, Vanderslice also stops by to talk about his upcoming album The Best Album Money Can Buy and to debut of our new segment – The Happy Recap w/Vanderslice. This is the start of summer and Take It Personal plans to keep you entertained all throughout. Grab your drinks, smokes and if you’re sweating profusely, then grab some ice cubes and rub them all over like Mookie did to Tina. Just make sure you listen to episode 28 on blast and preferably on repeat too!

Remember KMD?

Saturday, January 6th, 2018

A common misconception seems to be who makes up the Native Tongues collective. The core isn’t as big as you think. There are affiliates like L.O.N.S., The Beatnuts, Brand Nubian and influenced groups like Black Star or Da Bush Babees too. But the NT O.G.’s were responsible for countless classics. Many of which, I’m sure make up some of your favorites. For years, every time there was new group that sounded like they influenced by the Tongues, that group was immediately heralded as the next Tribe. It happened early on with The Roots, then Slum Village and then Little Brother. We desperately wanted a group to fill that void for us, but none could match up to ATCQ. Out of all the groups I mentioned, I have always felt KMD could have carried that torch. Even though they came out around the same time and shared a label with L.O.N.S. and Brand Nu, KMD felt very much like they were from the Native Tongues school. From the lyrical content to the production, it felt very familiar. Back then, everyone was loosely affiliated. You had Prince Paul working with both De La, Latifah and 3rd Bass. You had The Beatnuts working with Pete Nice, Chi Ali, Kurious and Common. Everybody was somehow related. KMD had a short lived career, but their two albums gave every indication that they could have carried on that Native Tongues tradition. There are a lot of similarities between Q-Tip and MF Doom too. Age, personalities, reclusiveness, creativity, production and dopness.

Check out our Complex collabo where we lace you with the 100 Best Native Tongues Songs.

Vote Take It Personal (Best Podcast of the Year)

Sunday, December 31st, 2017

Please take a minute and head over to On This Day In Hip Hop or http://onthisdateinhiphop.com/2017-otdihh-instagrammy and vote for us. We’re up against the best of the best like Joe Budden or is it Joe Buddens? We’re up against Drink Champs and the legendary Combat Jack as well. The competition is thick, but we know Take It Personal brought something none of those shows did this year and that is classic 90’s hip-hop. 8 ridicolous interviews such as DJ Premier, Slug, Apathy, Bonz Malone and Meyhem Lauren to name a few. 8 tributes, including 6 hours to DJ Premier and Prodigy and our 17+ hour West Coast Classic series. The polling will take you a few minutes and these were all fan nominated so many of the options you won’t know (like me). Some are WTF but definitely support Black Thought for best freestyle of the year and please, vote Take It Personal because we’re the indie label against the commercial corroborate giants. Think Rawkus late 90s vs. Def Jam (Ja Rule era).

As a thank you, here is Ep 20, our New Year’s Eve edition. It features 100% music with zero talking so you can let it bang from start to finish tonight!

Take It Personal (Ep 20: Anniversary Special)

Thursday, December 28th, 2017

Our first year is in the books! Take It Personal has released 20 episodes, including two 6+ hour tributes to both DJ Premier and Prodigy. We featured 8 exclusive interviews and dropped 8 tributes. We put together not 1, but 4 West Coast Classics, clocking in over 17 hours long. We had some fun giveaways, too. We celebrated Wu-Tang, ATCQ, Atmosphere, the architects, indie hip-hop and Philly hip-hop, but the biggest celebration we had was right here on episode 20 with you—the listeners. On Episode 20, our anniversary special, we bring it back to the essence with the music that speaks our names. The music that cold rocks a party or makes you want to cold cock somebody. It’s a non-stop celebration and best of all, we did it with your support. Thanks to all of you who called-in and chopped it up with us on the air. We had people from all over calling in and we even had a surprise call-in from Super Bowl XLVIII champion and Legion of Boom member, Walter Thurman. Your stories, your energy and your appreciation is what made this show so special for us. I’ll keep what we played on here a bit of a surprise for now, but I know EVERYONE will enjoy it! We put everything into making these shows and at the end of the day, we know, there isn’t another hip-hop podcast quite like Take It Personal. After listening to us for a year, we hope you’ll agree. Happy holidays and have a healthy New Year to all!

Take It Personal – Episode 7: Passing The Torch

Tuesday, March 14th, 2017

[soundcloud url=”https://api.soundcloud.com/tracks/311588854″ params=”auto_play=false&hide_related=false&show_comments=true&show_user=true&show_reposts=false&visual=true” width=”100%” height=”450″ iframe=”true” /]

Episode 7 might sound more like Drink Champs cuz we were highly intoxicated while recording this, but the music, like always, is on point Phife. We don’t necessarily have a theme this show, but we do focus on MC’s making dope music these days. It’s our passing of the torch episode, so-to-speak. We got joints from Your Old Droog, Nick Grant, Apathy, Killer Mike, Action Bronson, Roc Marciano and Milano Constantine to name a few. And it wouldn’t feel right dropping this show on March 9th without paying homage to Biggie, so keep it locked as we try to entertain you once again on Take It Personal.
