Philly Retrospectives Volumes 13-15 (1990-2004)

Today we’ve got another 3 volumes from my Philly Retrospective series. As usual there are some dope and obscure cuts here, don’t sleep. I don’t have much energy to provide background info or comment on songs tonight. If there is anything anyone wants to hear in full, let me know. I will do my best to dig it up and share it. In the meantime, dig into todays course. I hope it leaves you satisfied. Downloads and tracklistings can be found after the jump.

  1. Nice, schenectadyfan.Nice to see Chaundon,in the butters.I think peoples assume based on delivery, work with Dj Spinna, etc.that he’s from the Rotten Apple.Tuff Crew,Last Emperor all always welcomed edition’s.
The great suprise however was not a Philly artist at all as you pointed-out in parentheses(sic?),&that’s my brother the M-E-L man.In case many don’t know, the m-e-l.Is probably responsible for 80% of Aftermath’s best production dating back to “east coast killer, west coast….”.Also certified gems, like Xhibit’s “L.a.times” which is of course on his debut, and also on the most slept-on soundtrack ever! That being Loud Record’s(great film also, whether your a bball fan or not, imagine the passion, and emotional rollercoaster of Hoop Dreams, only theatrical/docudrama style.Set/filmed entirely on location in the County of Kings, and with all on location at Brooklyn’s best comp park’s and playgroud’s and for only true player’s,poser free.one of few spots you still see cats rocking 5 pairs of sock’s,lol.A beautiful thing!Get this soundtrack.)
Two more thing’s that may interest you S-fan.I attended thau U.of PGH.(Pitt).During time there got to know Mel quite well(pause). He lives in the ATL. now. However,i did a Radio Show, for WPTS,the said University’s station, where i majored in having everyone from Ice Dog,from the Tuff Crew(we used to call him Philly’s,Kool Keith.Cause, that dope, ahead of time,non-linear delivery.“My part of Town”was the show’s Intro.)Dj Slyce, both of them.lol.Philly’s Dj Slice was a student also, and in ’91,for our 3rd anny brought this 16yr.old female mc,her name Bahamadia(be real cool to see some of her work on the lists, next set maybe.)Steady B,visited and world premiered the BDP “serious”(“believe it or not”,rmx)on show. The student body was 30% Philly kids, which always perplexed me with all the good(prolly was affordability is what took me 385mi.’s away from Bushwick)Uni’s in Phila. why only 15% where 412 natives.
So S-fan,i have the Shows(Hansoul, was even in the house,Imagine,that.lol.)in entirity Mel-Man interviews, going off top to Ultra’s“Feelin’it” instr.,many treats that have never been exposed.I’d be happy to share.Mel,went thru(&i’ve heard, including my own,so many storys of peoples, and L’s takin on whole Crate collection’s.)yet have never witnessed the determination of Mel.From an area known as the hill district, pretty self explanatory. So much so,that any hard rainfall produced a flood in his basement.I’m talking like 1-2 times a month.Destroying, priceless vinyl,&equiptment regurarly. This kid defined perserverence,(&defied mother nature.)He’s a great interview,an all four(five)element contributor.I think,(along with Sam Sneed.Whom i also had on show during his pre-prod. for K-solo’s Times-Up lp.And 3yrs. following for a reunion show,to speak on his work with Dre,and all the “Murder Was the Case” soundtrack sessions.)
What a great experience. To be such a ny-centric b-boy,who arrived at orientation with Ink(&rustoleum on hands,my pnc&i attended together, and a day early scouted some beautiful terrain, and concrete. “whitewalls”,not the tire kind.Introducing ourselves to the city, same way we “got fame”in 5-boro’s)and left loving and realizing other than King T,cause he really was in ’88 only w.coast cat that made an impression on us(Funky Natives, loving urban contemparary jeep music)that last thing i expected was to go to the 4-1-2,and discover so many peoples, that were doing damage, all over, props.I also have heard great things about your east coast rarities series where can i find those?!?!

    Peace,props,and prosperity,Bklyn.“Boe”
